Ash and Snow

I know your secret smile

I know your every quiet wish

I know your unsaid sentiments

And I know your favorite food is fish

I know we all are fragile

And I know humans never last

And I knew every single reason that you didn't show up for class

I know that fires burn

And I know that ash floats down

I know the seasons change

And I know that spring will always come around

I know that snow is cold

And I know your eyes are palest blue

But the one thing that I don't know

Why you?

As slivers of white soot rain down

And I contemplate, my thoughts

Begin to wander, my thoughts

I get lost

I start to think of past things

Because the future isn't there

And then I find it funny that the ash

Is like snow, softly drifting through the air

A secret smile tells a story

Things that are fragile never last

Things burn and freeze and die

But

For some reason

I thought you were stronger than that.

Its funny how ash

Can look so much like snow

The same way it's funny that you can ask

But never, ever know.
