A Little Fall of Rain

The shadow stood over the bridge, the moonlight making a darkened shape. A young girl walked into the street lamps beam and paused. Her grey eyes seemed catlike as she peered into the darkness. She had a purpose. She wanted to find Marius before the barricades went up.

She had heard her father talking to the other thieves, "They'll be busy at the barricade tonight. Perfect opportunity for this old gentleman." he slurred the last word.

France was very unsettled at this point. The aristocrats had lavish parties while the poor made do on piety.

Eponine pretended to join the revolution so she could follow dear, sweet Marius. He had such elevated hopes that the people would rise above these aristocrats. Dressed as a young boy, Eponine searched for Marius amongst the men. Not seeing him, she got up the nerve to ask one of the men, careful not to give away her pretence.

"Excuse-moi, Monsieur," she began breathlessly

"Yes?" he barked out.

"I was wondering if you had seen a man, Monsieur. A Monsieur Marius?"

"Oui, I've seen 'im … left a while back, heading in that direction." The man pointed to the west side of the town.

"Merci Monsieur"

Eponine started to run in the direction the man had pointed. She could see him on the top of the pile of rubble making it higher. As Eponine came up beside him, he turned to her. A look of joy lit up his face as he recognized her. Eponine grinned; she thought the look of joy meant he finally returned her love. Alas, even though his voice had the touch of love, it was not for her.

"Eponine, you are a God sent gift! I need you to take this letter to Cosette!"

Mutely, Eponine took the letter, her heart broken once again.

With a letter to Cosette and her eyes full of tears, Eponine walked with heavy steps. Off in the distance gun shots were heard. Eponine raised her head in alarm Marius is back there was her only thought before she started to sprinted back towards the barricade. Falling forgotten was the letter to Cosette; all Eponine could think of, was Marius being shot.

Arriving at the barricade, Eponine immediately spotted Marius and heaved a sigh of relief when she saw him unharmed. Running to her love, Eponine was deaf to the sound of shells exploding. Until, all of a sudden, the world went dark.

When Eponine opened her eyes, the face of Marius swam before her. She felt his arms surrounding her and holding her close, it was just like one of her dreams. She felt his tears on her face and reached up to wipe them away. However when she raised her hand she saw blood. Eponine looked down at her torso and calmly she saw the bullet wound.

It was a strange sensation, Eponine couldn't feel a thing. Not the bullet that resided in her gut or the drops of rain that splattered on her face. She looked into Marius's face and whispered, "Now, don't fret, M. Marius, I can't feel a thing… and this rain will wash away all the blood."

"No, no Eponine, you must live!"

As the young girl looked upon Marius, her eyes full of love, she smiled a sad smile.

Encouraged by the smile, Marius told her all the things they would do together once she got better. But as he spoke, he could see the light dying in the eyes.

Weeping, Marius softly closed her eyes and hugged her close for the last time.
