There was a time when darkness enveloped the world. This was an age of shadow, hence it was known as the Dark Age. Fear spread across the reaches of civilization, and few sided with the once peaceful planet. Everyone seemed to flock towards the shadows. There were few, however, that stood firm with their beliefs, and fought for the freedom of humanity from the demons that lurked around every street corner. There were nine heroes that stood firm with their beliefs, but since they were fugitives, no one could help them. They were fugitives and traitors to the emperor of shadow, Vaati. He grew bored of chasing them around, and decided to meet them personally. He would meet their leader, Eric, personally and confront him. It was only a matter of time before hope ran dry for the planet. But then, something miraculous happened.

He talked to Wyre, Angel of Shadow, to see if there was a way to make conquering the world into a game. She gave him that opportunity, and he brought a bag of cards that he created, one of which represented his dark soul. She entrusted Vaati with her mystical powers, and he then granted his cards the power to physically injure people. He also granted his minions the power to initiate duels of darkness, using cards, which were life or death card duels. Then he mailed each of the nine heroes decks that he didn't have any use for, so that if they planed to win, they would need to be extra resourceful…
