The characters you are about to read have been modified from their original standing on pbs kids. Thank you.
Tobey had done something wrong in science class and, due to Becky being his lab partner, the two are sentenced to detention. They are given an amount of busy work to be completed in four hours. Tobey silently groans and Becky thumps her head on the desk. Miss Davis leaves the room after twenty minutes, locking the door behind her. The two kids write their assignment bitterly and quietly. After a while, Tobey is the first to break the silence.
"Botsford?"
"Yeah, McCallister?"
"How much have you got done?"
"Sixteen problems. You?"
"Fifteen."
The kids go back to work. The assignments are from several different class time aspects, from etymology to grammar webbing to mathematical equations. Tobey gets to the math portion and digs in his backpack for a pencil sharpener. Becky apparently also arrives there and breaks the silence for a second time.
"McCallister?"
"Mmm, Botsford?"
"Got a calculator?"
"Sure."
He smiles inwardly as he hands off his calculator. He is really good at math, he just doesn't care to show it since this class particularly doesn't interest him. There is only one thing in class that interests him and it remains a secret to everyone. Tobey looks down at his worksheets, realizing he has completed about six of them in the past hour. There is still a little over two hours left of detention. He drops his accent and breaks the silence yet again.
"Becky?"
She is a bit startled by use of her first name. "Uh, yeah, Tobey?"
"Why do you hate me?"
Silence fills the room. Becky drops her pencil and gawks at the boy to the northwest corner of her. He doesn't turn around. He doesn't seem to be fazed by asking such a question. Tobey continues with his worksheets. Becky runs her fingers through her hair as she struggles to find an answer.
"I never said I hate you."
Silence again. Tobey continues to write and calculate. Becky is still distressed. She shoves her work into her desk and lays her head down. A tear falls from Tobey's eye, landing on his paper.
"We're enemies." He speaks softly.
"Are we?"
Tobey continues writing. A few more tears fall out of place. He sniffles quietly, drying his eyes and clearing the smog forming in his glasses. The pencil he is writing with snaps in half and he shoves everything into his desk.
"Are you saying we're friends?" He asks warily, pronouncing the last word as if it holds some kind of poison.
"I don't know." She admits. "I think so."
He turns to face her, cheeks puffy and eyes swollen. "Do you like me?"
"Like you." She responds as a statement.
"I like you." Tobey admits.
Becky stands up and moves to the other side of Tobey. She shyly rubs her arm as he bashfully rubs the back of his neck. The kids blush over what all has been said.
"Like me how?" She chooses her words carefully.
He turns to face her, noses grazing. He stares at her, at her beauty. He interlaces his right hand with her left. Before she can realize what is happening, Tobey lunges forward to give Becky a most passionate kiss. They sit there, kissing, lip-to-lip for the next three minutes. Tobey lets go and situates himself back in his spot.
"I like you." He repeats.
Becky's eyes are widened. She is absolutely shocked. A very large blush creeps across her face and she looks away. Tobey smiles. They finally kissed.
"What about Wordgirl?" Becky winces.
Tobey runs his hand through Becky's hair. "I think she knows, m'dear."
"How could she?" She shakes her head.
"I do believe she just found out." He smiles. "I am hopelessly in love with her other side."
