When Tom approached the nursery, holding Sibbie's little hand in his, the first thing he saw was Lady Mary, sat in the rocking chair, and bouncing George on her knees. This image of happiness brought a smile on his face when he realised how his sister-in-law has changed. A few months ago, she wasn't even able to look at her son without thinking about Matthew, and everyone who saw her with the little boy knew she was ill-at-ease, not knowing what to do with her own child.
But now, everything was different. Mary enjoyed more and more spending time with her baby, and as time goes by, her gestures became less hesitant, and more loving.
"May I come in?" Tom asked, not knowing if he really wanted to interrupt this sweet and peaceful moment between Mary and George.
"Of course," she answered, without looking away from the little one.
Wordlessly, Sybbie sat on the floor, and caught one of the animal figures. Tom joined his daughter as she decided to pile a horse up on a pig.
"No more hurricane today?" Mary's voice was clearly amused as she watched her niece and her brother-in-law playing on the floor.
"Not for the moment, I believe she has other things in mind," Tom replied, looking at Sybbie, who added a dog on the horse before her animal pyramid fell down.
"I meant it, you know," Mary added after a few minutes. Tom looked at her, confused. Obviously, he didn't know what she was talking about.
"When I said I didn't want to lose you."
"Oh," Tom said, smiling. It was good to feel supported by someone, even if he knew he didn't belong to this world. The Crawley world. Sybil tried to impose him because she loved him and didn't want him to feel rejected by something she knew during her whole life.
"You're part of the family now, I hope you know that," Mary said, looking at the chauffeur. "And we don't want to lose another person we care about, we've had enough of this already."
Tom couldn't describe the young woman's expression on this moment, a strange mix of sadness and determination. Both of them were the ones who suffered the most these past two years, and who now struggled to resurface after Sybil and Matthew's death.
"Well, thank you for saying this. I appreciate," Tom added with a half-smile. And without saying anything else, the two parents got back to their children, both unsure about what the future held for them, but enjoying what they had for the moment : a family.
THE END.
Hello!
I really wanted to write something about Mary and Tom after seeing the fifth episode last week. And the two of them with their children are so cute that I couldn't resist and wrote this short text. Thank you for reading it, I hope you enjoyed it ;)
