Ashley was sitting at lunch having a good old time talking until the conversations turned to what their parents did for a living.
"My mom's a mail woman and my dad's a garbage man!" her little friend Ann said.
"Yeah well my parents beet that! Their both bookkeepers!" Booby exclaimed.
So Ashley, what do your parents do?" Ann asked.
"ummm.." Ashley didn't know what to say, what did her mom do? Save abnormals, but that was a secret… hmmm.. and what had her dad done?
"Ashley don't you know?" Bobby asked.
"Uh sure I do umm, my mom's a Doctor." She said shyly, it was true, somewhat.
"Whoa! A Doctor? That's like awesome!"
"Yeah I guess," Ashley mumbled knowing the next question would be about her father.
"What bout your dad?" Ann prodded.
"Ummm.." Ashley said.
"She probably doesn't have one!" Alyssa said. Alyssa hated Ashley for no reason but she made it her goal to make Ashley suffer.
"Sure she does! We all do." Ann said
"Ya all of us but her!" Someone else from the table said.
"Aint that right blondie! She aint got no daddy!"
"That's not true!" Ashley said and ran off to the bathroom, she didn't want to admit that she didn't have a daddy, well didn't know her daddy. She was six and six year olds could be so cruel sometimes, she didn't want to be made fun of because she didn't even know what her dad's name was. She hid in the bathroom crying until someone found her and called her mom.
Principle's office.
"Ashley!" Helen said as she walked into the office.
"Mommy!" Ashley said as she ran and threw her arms around her mother and continued to cry.
"What's wrong , love?"
"One of the teachers found her crying in the bathroom," the principle said.
"Well thank you for calling me." Helen said while still hugging her daughter.
"Can I just go home mommy?" Ashley asked through sobs.
"Of course, love." It was close enough to the end of the day and she knew Ashley wouldn't tell her what was wrong until they were away from other people so they went home.
Sanctuary.
"So what happened Ashley?"
"Six year olds are so cruel!" Ashley said plopping down on the sofa in her mom's office.
"how so?" Helen asked and couldn't quite hold back the laugh that formed from the comment her daughter made.
"We were talking about what our parents did for a living, and I said you were a doctor, but I couldn't say what my daddy did because I didn't know, and Alyssa the bloody bugga she is made fun of me and said that I probably didn't have a daddy!"
"Ashley watch your tongue! And you do have a daddy he's just dead. But he loved you."
"Mommy, what was his name?" Ashley asked innocently.
Helen stiffened for a minute, could telling her his name be all htat bad? She did have a right to know.
"Mommy?"
"Sorry, his name was Montague John Druitt."
"What did he do?"
"He was the best lawyer there was." Helen answered with a smile.
"A lawyer? Hmm that beets a mailman, and a garbage man and not to mention bookkeeper any day doesn't it?" Ashley said smiling at her mom.
"Yes it does."
"And your job too!"
"Yes I think that's true."
Ashley got up and gave her mom a really big hug and then asked with her most adorable puppy dog face she could muster, "Can we get ice-cream?"
"Of course."
