Hey there :) I just wanted to write something today and I figured I'd kind of make it up as I went along. I own nothing, per usual.

Katie stretched out and yawned.

"Tired?"

She smiled at the voice on the opposite end of the phone call. "A little. What time is it anyway?"

Miles and miles away, Travis looked at his alarm clock. "2:01. You wanna go to bed?"

"No." Katie looked up at the ceiling of her room and hoped he didn't want to either.

"Me neither."

She couldn't stop the grin on her face. "Yay. How long have we been on the phone, anyway?"

"Well I called you at eight-"

"And left a message."

"'Cause you don't like to pick up the phone when I call."

"You give me ulcers, and you know it."

In Arkansas, Travis rubbed his jaw and smiled. "You don't care, and you know it." Conner turned over in his sleep. "So why don't you talk to Conner as much, again?"

In Michigan, Katie rolled her eyes at the flirt in her crush's voice. This was her favorite kind of phone call: tiredness made them both far too honest. It also made his voice one of the best sounds on earth, even more so than usual. "The same reason I'm the only girl you call at any hour of the day."

"Oh right. I'm funny, smart, and beautiful."

"You wish, dickhead."

"Why do you always do that?"

Katie sighed. "It's easier than letting myself believe you love me."

"But I do-"

"Travis." Katie stared up at the ceiling. She and Travis were unlike anything else. They were best friends. She loved him deeply. He liked her half the time. She made effort. He didn't. They had tried. It hadn't ended easily. And now here they were. "Don't say what you don't mean."

"But I love you, Katie."

"Not half as much as I do. Let me know when we're evened out, and then call me." There was silence.

"Katie?"

"Yeah?"

"What do you feel when I say that I love you?"

She groaned. "Hell if I know. All I know about you, Travis Stoll, is that you're important to my fate. Don't know how or why. I'll let you know when I figure it out, but for now, everything else keeps changing too rapidly."

"Fair enough."

There was silence for a few minutes.

"Travis?"

"Yeah?"

"I think I'm gonna go to bed."

"Okay. I love you."

"Yeah, you too. Whatever that means."

"Even at 2 AM?"

"Especially then."

Travis smiled at the click of disconnection. Katie frowned at the empty space beside her in bed.

So it's kind of a complicated situation between the two, but I just wanted to do a one shot. Maybe someday I'll go into their story more because trust me, I've got ideas for this pair. Review, please!
