A/N; Daryl is in a VERY dark place now. I do hope he sees Beth again but who knows with this show? They'll probably leave us hanging till next season with Beth, based on what I've heard.
Summary: Beth was just another dead girl and all hope was gone. Maybe he'd loved her, but all he knew now is that there were no good people left. Spoilers for 4x14.

Abandoning Hope

He was a damn fool for getting all sappy and doe eyed when Beth Greene was just another dead girl. She'd been wrong and there weren't no good people around anymore - he didn't know what kind of murderer or rapist took her. All Daryl Dixon knew was that she was dead. She'd let him hope and he'd almost been able to think...
It didn't matter what he'd thought. He didn't know what the hell love was, but he knew it didn't survive in a world like this. It didn't exist anymore. Hope was a prize for the foolish, the dead people walking, or those who'd soon end up dead anyways. Only the ruthless survived. Only those who'd long ago lost hope. Hope was a fools dream.
She'd said he'd be the last man standing.
Screw that to hell.
Tears glistened in his eyes and he was thankful that most of the douchebags he was now travelling with were asleep, except for Joe, that psychopath never slept, not around the others. Sleeping showed weakness. Daryl had been dumb enough to let himself get weak far too often.
He remembered that last look she gave him before they were separated. She was so naive not to notice that she'd become his last hope, his refuge. He'd wanted to tell her then too. He still didn't know what love was but he'd let her see more of him than he let anyone else see. He just knew love had something to do with trust and he trusted her with his life.
Now he knew it was just about turning into a damn hopeful fool who had a one way ticket to death row anyway. Love couldn't change a damn thing.
He thought about all the horrible things that might have happened to her after someone took her in that car. Beaten? Raped? Sliced? His heart panged. If he could go back he'd do a deal, any deal to save her. But there was no going back, there was only moving forward. Maybe he had... loved her, not that it mattered now.
Nobody got a happily ever after. Not Rick, not Lori. Not Glenn, not Maggie. And sure as crap not him and Beth.
Hope brought him nothing. It brought Beth nothing.
All hope was gone.

I did have to do this drabble after "Alone".
And check out my Eugene Porter drabble too.
It's more fluffy romantic feels.
