There's no way that maternity books can prepare you for the real deal. No matter how many books you read, no matter how many tv shows you watched that teach you how to be a mom. No matter how many times your lovely and supportive wife tells you that there's nothing to worry about, that after having the baby every part of your body goes back to normal or how many times she tells you that she will be by your side when the time comes. It just... It doesn't matter at all because giving birth to a little human being it's just something no one can prepare you for. Not because Regina Mills was worried about her looks. Oh no, she had worn her belly with so much pride as the months went by. She was happy and she felt blessed to be able to carry a little human inside her belly. To be able to give life and have a piece of her and her true love in a little person they would see grow.
What Regina was worried about was not being able to give her best. To be the mommy she wanted to be, but the mommy their baby would need them to be. Emma had reassured her that she will be a great mother, just like she had been with Henry when he was a baby. Emma was standing next to her wife, holding her hand, bringing her water and smoothing every contraction with a sweet and calm brush of her hand on Regina's hair. Giving birth was something that Emma had already gone through. Of course when she gave birth to Henry she was only a child and she had no one by her side, but she was thrilled with happiness to be able to stand next to her wife as she gave birth to their new family addition.
For over nine months, both of them had refused to know the gender of their baby, they wanted it to be a surprise. For them, the gender was just something extra, all they wanted was to have a healthy baby. To be able to finally hold it in their arms. Regina was preparing for her last push. The one that would finally make their baby come out of the womb that had the baby's house for the past 9 months. And this was it. She took a deep breath. Regina put her hand on Emma's heart and pushed as hard as she could. Emma was holding on to her wife's hand. Giving her support as the moment got closer and closer "You can do this baby, just push once more" she said as Regina gave her final push. Finally the baby came out, ripping the placenta bag, the doctor assigned to this and offered the scissors to Emma "Would you do the honor?" He said with a smile. Emma was speechless, and she nodded in conformation, she took the scissor and cut the only connection Regina had left of their baby. Because of the way the doctor had grabbed the baby, Emma wont be able to see what it was, she could only expect the best. Finally Regina took a last breath and laid back.
Once the doctor made sure the baby was healthy and a little bit more clean he went back to where now Regina and Emma were laying down, both mothers anxious to meet their little gift. "Are you ready to meet your baby?" The doctor asked. He had followed every single petition Regina had asked for. A room just for them. Personally assigned just for them. And then to not tell them the gender of the baby until he was sure the baby was healthy and was told to bring it to them. Emma and Regina had discussed this. They wanted it to be special and a surprise, just like discovering that they were going to be parents again had taken them by surprise. "Yes" both of them said almost like a chant. "Doctor.. We are ready to know if is a girl or a boy" Emma said taking in Regina's hand. She caressed Regina's hand with her thumb. "It's a boy" the doctor finally said letting Emma have the first hold of the baby.
Emma couldn't believe it. Regina and her had created this tiny little human somehow, she noticed the dark brown hair spots. She had heard that hairy babies hurt more when they were coming out. She made a mental note to ask Regina, then she quickly moved close to Regina, to let her see their precious gift. Regina lifted her arms and as she finally had him in her arms a tear made its way down her cheek. "Hi Damien, we have been waiting for you for 9 months" she said caressing her babies cheek as gentle as she could. The baby was falling asleep, only reacting to Regina's and Emma's voice now and then. Emma reached for one of Damien's hand and the baby soon grabbed hold onto it. "He has your cheeks" Regina told Emma. She just smiled as she kept admiring their baby. "And he has your lips" Emma told Regina as an answer. Emma stood up, and kissed Regina gently on the lips. "Thank you" she said almost in a whisper. "Thank you for what?" Regina asked questioning Emma's words. "For giving me another reason to be happy, and another reason worth living and worth loving you" she kisses Regina's forehead and Damien's as well.
Regina realized that the books, the tv shows and even Emma were never going to prepare her for this moment. This moment was in fact one of the most bittersweet she would ever have. One because her little angel was finally in her arms and she had made Emma happy, yet once again, but for the other one she wished she had her mother to share this moment with. Emma on the other hand was full and utterly happy. There was nothing she didn't wish for that Regina hadn't made it happen. Having Damien was just a plus. A big and amazing plus. There were no words to describe what she felt.
After a few moments, Regina fed her precious angel and the nurse took him to his crib so Regina could rest. She finally got some sleep. She deserved it, she had been in labor for the past ten hours. From cramps, to contractions and the incredible delivery of the baby. She slept for the longest. By the time she woke up, Mary Margaret, David and Henry were waiting outside. They brought the baby once again and she told Emma to let everyone else in. By the time everyone came inside Regina was in a sitting position with Damien in her arms and Emma sitting next to her. "Everyone meet Damien, Damien meet your grandparents and your big brother" Henry was the first one to have a hold to his baby brother, soon was Mary Margaret and David at last. "What does his name mean Regina?" Mary Margaret asked. "It means tame. He would grow up to be a leader rather than a follower, he will be determined and strong." Regina said as proud as she could. Everyone hang around with them for as long as they could. Emma walked everyone out, leaving Regina and Damien alone. "You know" Regina said as she accommodated Damien's blanket burrito, "You are a gift to me. I never thought I would have the opportunity to carry life, never imagined that I would create something as magnificent as you are, but here you are. And I promise you, that I'll do my best to be the best mother you can have. You my dear Damien are the product of true love. The most powerful magic of them all. Your mother and I are so so lucky to have you my little prince" she said placing a sweet kiss on her baby's head.
By the time Emma came back Regina had the tired look on her face "Mind if I take the little prince while you sleep?" Emma asked, Regina nodded in confirm and handed Damien over to Emma. Within the second she was sleeping. Emma carried Damien in her arms back and forth through the room in hope the baby would find it soothing and would fall sleep as well. She got him closer to her mouth and she whispered into his delicate ear "You are the product of true love. I know right now you don't understand, but one day you will. Your mom has been waiting for you her whole life. You gave her an experience she would never forget. And you gave me a second chance. I love you little man" Emma said finally giving a kiss to Damien on his little forehead.
And so, their new beginning began. A beginning where Emma, Regina, Henry and Damien are a happy family, which test like every other family. They were a family of their time. And meeting Damien was the beginning and end of their life.
Thank you for reading!
