I'm not your friend I'm an animal who dreamed he was a man, but the dream is over and the beast is awake, and I will come for you because it is in my nature. - Victor Creed, X Men Origins: Wolverine
Latverian Royal Palace 1987…
Coulson was nervous his body was covered in sweat his heart was beating fast. This was the first time he'd been part of something like this. "You nervous Coulson?" Garrette asked grinning.
"What?" Coulson asked turning his head up he'd been lost in thought for so long he didn't know how to respond. He shook his head trying to get his thoughts together. "It's not that I'm nervous it's just-"
"Grow a pair will you Phil! I swear you spent all our academy days whining about how you wanted to do the cool stuff and be a badass well now is your chance." Furry said loading his handgun.
"I didn't think we'd ever have to do this!" Coulson yelled voicing his disgust and concern. "We're S.H.I.E.L.D. we're supposed to be the good guys and protect the innocent prevent collateral damage!"
"That's what we're doing Phil." Fury replied "The Von Doom family may not want to cause trouble but by refusing to give S.H.I..E.L.D. their vibranium and alien technology, technology while uncovered on their soil is ours by the laws passed by the United Nations we cannot allow some rogue government to simply have that kind of power! Now the official story will be that S.H.I.E.L.D. acting under orders from the United Nations took out the Doom family and brought democracy to an oppressed people."
"But it's a lie." Coulson said horrified.
Furry gave Coulson a stern look "Lies protect the innocent Phil do you really think everything's cut and dry? Did you really think you wouldn't have to get your hands bloody when you took this job?"
Coulson didn't say anything after that he just remained silent accepting his orders he had no idea that the actions committed this very night would come back to haunt him he had no idea this night would give birth to a monster. I wonder if Coulson knew the ramification of this mission would he have to gone through with it. Regardless at this point in his life he didn't stop to think about the consequences of his actions and he along with the rest of the tactical team marched off toward Doom Castle under the cover of darkness.
Latverian Royal Palace 2017…
Thirty years had passed since that day and the palace once considered so grand had rotted and fallen into disrepair. Two men walked the grounds one of them was a salesman man named Milo an old man with many years of experience he felt sad to see what had become of Latveria's royal palace.
"I apologize for the mess Sir after the reformation of the Latverian government S.H.I.E.L.D. acquired all rights to everything belonging to the Doom Family. They kept the palace heavily isolated and blocked off to the general public for reasons I can't imagine. During that time they never cared to care for the estate properly."
"I see." The second man said looking around the large castle it was a sad sight the once proud and distinguished home to the Doom Family had fallen so far it almost broke his heart.
"May I ask why you wanted to purchase this castle given its current state?"
The man turned to enter the study standing in front of an old fire place for a moment Milo didn't think he'd respond until he broke the silence "I grew up hearing stories about the Doom family and they're noble lineage it didn't seem right to let their home rot away."
"I see. If I may are you able to afford this estate Sir? I'm sorry but you don't seem like the kind of man who is use luxury."
The Man turned to face Milo taking a step forward his presence became darker almost threatening "I'm more than capable of paying I recently came into some money that I inherited from my biological parents. I didn't find out until not too long ago that I was adopted."
"I see that must have been difficult for you to learn." Milo felt like his throat was closing up. Something about this man's demeanor had changed like he'd gone from a nice polite foreigner to a monster who'd snap his neck without a second thought.
"It was but I must confess it did explain a lot given how I was treated growing up. Regardless my birth parents left me well provided for and I was able to use the rest of the money to make some very wise investments. You can leave the paper work with me I'll mail it to your office."
"Of course Sir."
Milo left quickly not wishing to be around the man any longer than he had to, took his leave. The man turned his attention back to the fireplace looking up at what was clearly painting covered by a sheet. He took hold of the sheet ripping it off exposing a painting of the Doom Family.
He stood quiet for a moment of silence and reverence taking in each face the faces of his mother and father and his two brothers one older one younger "I'm sorry I haven't been home in a while. I'm even sorrier it took me so long to remember the truth. Like the Savior I have returned from the dead and like the Savior I'll bring about a great salvation. I will right the wrongs done to our family and our country. I'll punish those who out of greed and a lust for power destroyed us.
"Especially him. Coulson the incompetent fool dares to call himself a hero. He speaks of protecting the innocent and upholding justice! I promise I will get justice, I promise I will destroy him, corrupt those who choose to follow him, and I will break everything and everyone he hold most dear. Once he has nothing and no one left I will put a bullet in his head. After all they've seen fit to label me a villain and a monster seems only right I play the role I've been given."
Latveria 30Years Ago...
Werner von Doom stood in front of the fire place his mind filled with worry Shield had been pressing his government to share some recently discovered vibranium. He wished the vibranium had never been found it would have saved him and his country a lot of trouble. He was so lost in thought didn't even notice his wife walking in.
"Darling are you okay?" Cynthia asked worried.
"I'm fine it's just when that vibranium was uncovered a lot of people took notice including Shield. My Grand Father told me stories about how during the Second World War the Nazi's or to be more specific Hydra ravaged our country searching for it. I always thought they were mistaken now I know different. To think vibranium would be anywhere else but Wakanda.
"To make matters worse the United Nations are demanding we share it while my political advisors and protestors are demanding we not use it." Werner sighed despairingly "I am reminded of something I read in the history books supposedly a scientist once said to Captain America 'A man who has known power all his life will lose respect for that power.' Regrettably that has become the case with the world it has lost respect for power and in that loss humanity may lose its soul." He didn't like telling his wife about these not when she was pregnant with their fourth child a girl.
"Father." A young boy who couldn't be older than four said out of nowhere shocking his parents. "Is it true? Are the other nations really threatening us?"
"Oh don't worry Victor I'm just..." Werner paused trying to think up a way to ease his youngest son's mind.
"Your Father is just over reacting Victor there is nothing to worry about now why don't we get you back to bed. Maybe tomorrow we can take you over to your friend Ophelia's?" Cynthia said speaking quickly but in a reassuring tone trying to hurry her son out of the room and to bed.
Werner couldn't help but worry as he pondered the potential consequences his actions would have for his family if only he knew the truth. After taking a deep breath Werner opened his desk drawer taking out a bunch of files. He carried the files toward his book case and tilted a book slightly.
After he tilted the book, the book case started to move revealing a hidden safe he turned the combination lock and opened the safe revealing a collection of more files and also a vibranium mask that had been sent from Wakanda as gift. Werner placed the files inside and took out the mask it was well made and could encompass the entire head.
Werner couldn't understand why the people of Wakanda sent him this mask but he agreed with their plea, vibranium was too dangerous to be shared with the masses. He placed the mask back inside the safe shutting it all up. That was when he heard his wife screaming followed by the sounds of gun fire.
"Cynthia!" He cried quickly he reached into his desk taking out a gun and running off to save his wife and son. He ran down a long hallway to find his son screaming his beloved bleeding out and a Shield agent dead blood flowing from his eyes, ears, nose and mouth.
"Get Victor and his brothers to safety!"
"Are you crazy I cant-"
"It's too late for me and our daughter but not our sons go!"
Werner was struggling with the decision but after a moment of hesitation he was about to grab Victor and get his other sons. Until Coulson and Garrette showed up aiming they're guns at Werner.
"Just stay calm Mr. Doom-" Coulson said stuttering this was his first mission and
"Come on Phil really is that all you got?" Garrette laughed turning his attention to Werner.
"Here's how it's going to go Mr. Doom we either kill you and your family or you give Shield access to the vibranium and treasure trove of alien tech found in your country."
"Run Werner save Victor!" Cynthia screamed stretching out her arm she starting chanting in some strange language and soon Coulson and Garrette were on their knees Coulson managed to get a shot shooting Cynthia in the head.
"Cynthina!" Werner cried quickly aiming his gun ready to fire only get hit by Coulson's second shot falling to floor dead.
All the while the little boy watched crying watching the life slowly fade from his father's eyes "Murderer!" Victor screamed reaching for the gun only to be hit by Garrette's fist his head slamming against cold stone floor knocking him out.
"What was that magic?" Garrette asked looking at Cynthia's body.
"Don't be stupid. She has to be a gifted or something. What about the kid I don't want to kill a kid." Coulson sweated and breathed harder and harder.
"What you have no problem with orphaning him but you draw the line at killing him? Well-"
A frantic Coulson turned to Garrette desperately hoping he'd have an answer "Well what? Please tell me you have an idea that doesn't end with me or you killing this poor kid."
"Well he's pretty young in a few years doubt he'll remember any of this. I know a family with son wanting a few more-" The two heard gun fire and children screaming "besides sounds like he just became an only child."
Washington D.C. Present Day Three Weeks Later…
Coulson carefully straightened his tie this was a big step for S.H.I.E.L.D. since the resurgence of Hydra they'd been forced to live in the shadows but now things had changed Ward was gone presumed dead thanks to Skye now going by Daisy. It wasn't easy to make their comeback. Stark had refused to offer financial support and Norman Osborn an equally wealthy and intelligent businessman was their strongest opposition. Osborn spoke out quite frequently about trusting S.H.I.E.L.D. and began pushing for the founding of a new organization one he called H.A.M.M.E.R. it all started when his company once on the verge of bankruptcy made a full recovery thanks to a silent partner.
Coulson and his people had tried finding the identity of Osborn's silent partner to no success. Whoever it was though at the very least was a multi billionaire and a genius from what little Intel S.H.I.E.L.D. could find on him.
Coulson's cell phone vibrated, he took it out and read a new text: Do you believe you are a good man Mr. Coulson?
Coulson raised an eye brow perplexed by the message he replied: Yes. Who is this?
The messenger replied almost instantly: You are not a good man you are a hypocrite a liar and murderer who would rather take a promising future over standing with your so called principles. I know about Latveria 1987. I give you this one chance to confess your sins if you do not you have only yourself to blame for what's to come.
Coulson's heart pounded as the events of that night came rushing back he sweated nervously and why wouldn't he? After all it was an off the books operation no official records. Coulson was in such a shock he almost dropped his phone but he regained his grip and replied: This isn't funny don't contact me again.
Coulson quickly turned off his cell phone and stuffed it in his pocket.
"Are you okay Phil?"
Coulson jumped startled he turned around to see May "Oh sorry I was just lost in thought."
"About what?"
Coulson replied with a nostalgic smile "About how far we've come about the sacrifices we've had to make."
"Are you having doubts Phil?"
"No of course not it's just sometimes I wonder if we've done right by the people we've sworn to protect while still upholding our principles. I know we did a lot of bad things under Fury but I have to believe they were for a greater good."
May nodded in agreement "I understand Phil are you sure you still want to make the speech. By the way Simmons and Fitz are going to be a little late to see your speech. They just texted me about a half hour ago apparently Simmons got morning sickness while getting ready."
Coulson couldn't help but smile "I still can't believe it you know. Here we all are living happy lives. Simmons and Fitz are married expecting their first child, Daisy is aspiring to take over for me after I retire and we are finally-"
May stopped him with a kiss he couldn't get over how beautiful she was in that red dress "Together." She said with a smile.
"Yeah we're finally getting what we deserve."
Latveria, Castle Doom…
The man sat at his desk watching Coulson through his lap top "The fool should have heeded my warning now I'm going to have to make the people he loves suffer. Prepare yourself Coulson the wrath of Doom will soon be upon you and the best part is you have no idea who I am, what I look like, or how many of my followers have infiltrated your life. So you will never see me coming when I tear it all away from you."
Doom took out his cell phone making a call "It's me activate the dead pool on Coulson and his associates. Make it open for anyone to collect the money on their heads."
