Worth the Pain
The screaming in his ear was pretty bad, but honestly, if Hale had to name the worst part of childbirth it would be the bone-crushing grip Kat had on his hand the entire time. By the time the doctor announced the baby's head was crowning she had him down on his knees clutching the bed in pain.
Still, he let her grip his hand to steady herself. Hale was sure he'd end up with a brace on it by the end of the day, at least! The nurses were even throwing him sympathetic looks between contractions…
"Almost there," the doctor's voice called from the other side of Kat's bent knees, "I can see the shoulders now." I suppressed a whimper as Kat squeezed my hand again, "Go ahead and push, Kat."
There was more screaming, a lot more screaming…
And then a single, soft cry cut through the noise. And the room fell silent; the only thing that pierced my senses was that lovely sound. The doctor stood up straight, holding a bloody and goop-covered infant.
"It's a girl," he told us as he handed her off to the nearby nurse to be cleaned.
"A girl?" Kat questioned wearily, a smile brimming as she looked at me with surprise in her eyes.
I grinned, slipping my hand from Kat's as she loosened her grip, "Guess I broke the Hale tradition."
She laughed groggily, watching with interest as the nurse bustled over our new daughter. Daughter. I'd have to get use to that… "What should we name her?" Kat questioned suddenly, her forehead creasing in worry, "Wesley Worthington obviously won't work now."
"We'll do it the same as last time, you take the first name and I'll take the middle," Hale comforted her, standing up and running his good hand down her check, "It'll be fine."
Kat nodded somewhat, laughing a little hysterically as all the emotions of the day seemed to catch up with her. The nurse brought over the newly swaddled infant and set her in Kat's arms. Almost instantly her eyes lit up at having the baby in her arms, "She's beautiful."
"My two lovely ladies," Hale grinned cheerfully down at the two of them.
"Willow," Kat proposed suddenly, her head popping up to look into Hale's eyes, "For a first name."
"Kick-ass witch name? Good with me," Hale winked at her as he stooped a little closer to see his daughter better, "How about Wednesday for a middle name then?"
He didn't even have to look up from the cooing Willow to see his girlfriend roll her eyes to know she was doing so, "You watch too much television."
"And you watch too little Katarina," Hale shot back dramatically, smiling at his daughter he continued, "But Will shall help me corrupt you, won't you sweetie?" He laughed lightly as his daughter's hand reached slowly for his, and even Kat's protests died in her throat.
"Willow Wednesday Hale it is," Kat sighed, letting Hale take the pink bundle from her hands as she stifled a yawn, "No changing it while I'm asleep."
"Got it, Kitty-Kat," Hale teased as he rocked his baby girl carefully, his hand feeling almost miraculously better now. All the pain was worth the beautiful little girl in his arms, and judging by the smile on Kat's face as she slept Hale was guess she agreed.
