"And in there are where the cells are."

"Is that where the bad guys are, Daddy?"

"Yep. This is where we hold them right after we arrest them."

"So that's a jail?"

"Not really. It is just a holding place so we don't have to worry about them trying to escape."

"Oh." The boy looked at the gigantic door. Well, it was gigantic to him anyway. He noticed a window near the top. "Can I look through the window Daddy?"

The man shrugged. It wouldn't hurt the kid. "Sure." He lifted the boy up and watched as his eyes got big. Why seeing rows of bars excited the kid was beyond the man.

"Daddy, I don't see any bad guys" he complained.

Good the man thought. You don't need to be seeing the scum I deal with. Out loud he said, "They stay away from the bars. They're probably sitting down near the back of the cells."

"Oh." The boy was obviously disappointed.

The man patted his son's back. "Come on. Let's go back." He sat his son down and grabbed his small hand, leading him to the squad room.

Back at the father's desk, another police officer walked up to them.

"Good work on the Kinsley case, McCoy."

McCoy stood out of respect. "Thank you, sir."

""And who might this be?

"Sir, this is my son John. John, this is Captain Moore."

"Hi John. It's a pleasure to meet you."

"Hello sir." The two shook hands.

"Showing your kid where you work?"

"Yes sir. He's been asking for a while."

Captain Moore smiled. "How old are you John?"

"Seven, sir."

"Ah. So are you going to be a cop when you grow up?"

Before John could answer in the affirmative, his father stepped in. "Actually, he's going to be a lawyer."

"A lawyer?"

"Yes sir. Most likely for the DA's office."

"A DA?"

"With John working for them, they will finally listen to us and quit losing our papers."

Captain Moore laughed. "Amen to that."

But John hadn't heard any of this. Right as his father began talking, an officer pushing a man in handcuffs came into the room. The officer was in complete control over the arrested man. John watched with interest.

One day that's going to be me. I'm going to wear Daddy's uniform and have a badge and a gun and handcuffs. I'm going to arrest all the bad guys in the city. No one will get away. They'll all be put in jail. No more bad guys. No more.
