First time writing for TMNT. 2k12 verse.
Sometimes it was more than he could take; the irritability, the fatigue, the ataxia, and the hunger. It was especially hard during a fight where coordination was key. One moment he would be spinning his staff in a fluid motion and the next he would be having a hard time simply holding it because of the muscles in his arm twitching. Luckily nothing too terrible happened anymore. The last seizure he could remember having was when he was thirteen, around two years ago.
Then April moved into the lair. Donatello's first reaction was excitement; being able to see April every day without having to worry about the kraang attacking her. But after the initial reaction came a second that Donnie couldn't classify. Was it dread? Fear? Embarrassment? What did he have to be embarrassed about? It was only a small condition, a little chink in the armor so to speak.
So why was he wary when he sat down to eat, hoping that she didn't notice that he had larger portions than his brothers? Hoping she didn't notice that he skipped practice sometimes. Hoping she didn't notice the vials of insulin kept in the kitchen. What was he afraid of?
He learned too soon that hoping could only get you so far. It was a quiet day in the lair; Donatello had showed up late for practice and was paired with April to spar. As soon as they started he felt it in his muscles; the familiar twitch in his arms. But this time it wasn't just a twitch. Before he knew it, Donnie was on the ground with his muscles jerking uncontrollably. Two years of progress gone to waste in a matter of seconds.
The seizure lasted a minuet. His brothers, though slightly worried, were level headed. Raph got his insulin, Mikey and Leo cooked up some carbohydrate foods, and Splinter sat beside him like any loving father would. After he stopped shaking and got some food in his stomach he looked at April. She had hardly moved from where she stood, her baby blue orbs glued to him. Her eyes swam in pools of fright, confusion, and worry. Worry that he had caused.
She was frightened because of him, frightened because of him, and worried because of him. Donatello knew what the emotion was now: Disappointment. Disappointment in himself because now she knew. Now April realized that he couldn't help himself, so how was he supposed to help her?
