"Angels descending, bring from above/ Echoes of mercy, whispers of love." –Fanny J. Crosby
Emmett McCarty was sure he was in Hell.
He writhed in agony as flames spread throughout his entire body; even, his very bones felt like they were engulfed in fire. His throat was hoarse from the many hours he had spent screaming but he couldn't stop them from coming as the torture continued.
His mother had been right. Maybe if he had attended church more with the rest of the family or worked harder instead of hunting and spending time with pretty girls, he wouldn't be in Hell right now. He wondered if they knew he had passed on yet.
He worried how they would take his death.
However, that brief line of thought ended has the flames waved over him again.
He screamed.
Suddenly, a cold hand touched his forehand; though the action brought on more pain, he opened his eyes to look into the face of an angel. Her golden hair fell into her face as she peered down at him; her eyes were a deep gold and her face resembled a marble statue he had once saw a picture of in school. She was exactly what he had imagined angels to look like except for the inexplicably sad expression on her face.
A hazy memory suddenly came to mind through the pain: after that stupid bear had attacked him, something had made the animal run. From his prone and wounded position, he tried to lift his head and see what had scared the bear off, he had come face to face with his angel. Despite her slender frame, she had lifted him in her arms and sped off with him. He was sure she was delivering him to heaven before the agony started.
"The pain will be over soon, I promise. You're going to be alright," she whispered. She ran her fingers through his hair and despite the continuing pain, he felt oddly safe.
He couldn't be in Hell after all if his angel was with him.
And when whatever he was experiencing at the moment ended, he was going to find out what made her seem so sad and put a stop to it.
He didn't know how but he was going to make her happy.
No matter what happened, he wasn't going to leave her.
