It was a dark and clear night. Suddenly, a voice called out . . .
"Everybody have a partner? This station can get rough."
"Whashewhosit?" A startled Trip opened bleary eyes to see the banked campfire and a sky full of stars. Rolling over, he noticed Malcolm sitting up, phaser in hand and a wry grin on his face.
"The Captain's talking in his sleep." Malcolm jerked his head over to where Jon moved restlessly. "What do you think, should we wake him?"
"Naw. Let 'im dream." Trip picked up his ears as Jon continued.
"You're with me, of course." A little laugh accompanied this bit.
"What's going on?" Malcolm and Trip looked over at Travis' whisper.
"Cap'n's talkin' in his sleep."
"What's he saying?" Hoshi's head popped up on the other side of Jon.
Malcolm voice was low. "He's in a space station, pairing off with someone. For safety, I would assume."
The small group fell silent, listening to Jon. "You should get it. It matches your eyes," he said in a soft voice.
"Ooooo!" Trip grinned. "A fem-i-nine type somebody!" Travis shushed him.
"I'm getting hungry, do you want lunch? There's a café up ahead."
Eavesdropping on Jon, Trip and Travis were having a blast, but Malcolm doubted the ethics of the situation and Hoshi wondered who the woman was. However none of them were about to wake him up.
"Excuse me, the lady said she wasn't interested." A harsh tone had entered his voice.
"Uh oh." Malcolm looked at Trip.
Jon began to shift a bit more. "Back off, she's mine . . . says this ring!"
"He's married to her?!" Travis bit back a laugh.
"Son of a . . . Hoshi! Get out of here, sweetheart! Go find Malcolm!"
The men turned as one to Hoshi. "Hosh . . . are you and the Cap'n . . ." Trip's incredulous voice trailed off as she stared in shock at Jon.
"Don't be ridiculous! He's the Captain, I'm . . . just an Ensign . . ." Her panicked eyes never left Jon, denial and another emotion threading her voice.
"No! Hoshi! God, no!" Obvious pain ripped through Jon's voice as he continued to thrash about, fighting the confines of his sleeping bag. "No, Hoshi . . . sweetheart . . ." His voice breaking, tears began to fall from Jon's closed eyes.
Not willing to see Jon suffer and not caring how it would look, Hoshi scrambled out of her own bag and went to kneel next to him. She tentatively took his hand. "It's ok. I'm fine. Just a scratch." Her voice soft, she reached out, laying her palm on his cheek.
"You're alright?" Jon's breath hitched in his throat, the joy in his own voice palatable.
"I'm fine. You saved me."
A shuddering sigh went up from Jon, and he fell quiet, a slight smile on his face. Hoshi waited a moment, then stared one by one at the other men.
"Not a word about what happened here. He cannot know."
One by one the men nodded, settling back down to sleep. Hoshi gave Jon a last wistful look climbing back into her bedroll, unsure of what to do with this new found knowledge.
One thing was for sure, she was very glad she didn't talk in her sleep. It was bad enough the guys knew the Captain supposedly liked her, if they ever found out how she felt about him . . .
