"Soda is nice and everything, but sometimes you want wine, right?" I fiddle with my fingers, unable to meet Evie's eye.
"Just choose something." She sighs exasperated.
"More like a very fine wine." I smile at the thought. "If you had a choice between the bubbly, childish soda or a sophisticated, grown-up wine, which would you choose?"
"Sandy…" She complains. "I've got a date with Steve at nine. It would be nice if we could order sometime before the next five hours. Just pick one and be done with it."
"It's not that easy." I tell her. "Just hear me out. Soda is great when you're having a party or you wanna laugh or you just wanna have a good time, right? It's a treat. But with wine, it's more grown-up. It's smooth. It's expensive and sophisticated and down-to-earth. You almost feel like you have to stick out your pinky and dress really nice and you don't want to down it, like you do with soda, you want to sip it."
"They'll probably card you if you order the wine." Evie glances at her menu.
"I know. It's not really right. But at the same time, I really like the wine."
"So get the wine."
"But I also like the soda."
"So get the soda!"
"Evie, you're not helping!"
"It's just a drink!" Evie rolls her eyes and waves over a waitress. Her eyes widen as she looks back at me. "It is just a drink, isn't it?"
