There was no mistaking it.
Gabriel would recognize Castiel's grace, even as weak as it was, anywhere. He shook his head and reached for another pixy stick. He simply didn't understand why his dear baby brother was willing to give everything, in the literal sense of the word, up for two mud monkeys.
In the back of his mind he heard a very Castiel like voice speaking. Telling him exactly why he would do such a thing, and it was sad that it was for the same reason that he himself had fled down here. It was because Castiel had begun to look at them more as family then his actual family.
Pulled out of his thoughts as his Game Show was interrupted. How did that little sneak of a seraph get into his TV Land?
Not trying very hard to conceal his sigh of irritation (or maybe worry) Gabriel stood from his bar stool. Raised his hand, and snapped his fingers.
He went to collect his fading little brother before he got anywhere with those damned Winchesters.
"Why do you help them?"
Castiel stared at his brother. It had been, decades since he had last seen him. Decades of pain and suffering.
"Well? I asked you a question and I am expecting an answer"
Gabriel tried not to let his rank slip into his voice, but Cas was falling from Heaven. Falling for to humans. This was no laughing matter.
"Castiel, as you older bro-"
"You lost that title when you abandoned me"
Granted it was a response, one that Gabriel would regrettably admit had hurt, however it was not the response he was looking for.
"Cas"
"You."
"What?"
"You taught me Gabriel, you taught me that we help those who can't help themselves. They are my family"
Gabriel took a step forward, Castiel backwards, the archangels eyes flaring.
"I am your family, not those two mud mon-"
"Family isn't by blood Gabe, it is those who are there for you when you need them most."
It was Gabriel's turn to take a step back now. Castiel's words had stung. Why had they stung? Why was he letting this simple seraph get to him? Who was he to...
"Maybe, brother, it is because you view me as more than that of a simple seraph"
It was true, so very sadly true. Castiel had always been more then a clone of a brother. He had raised Castiel, been his best friend, the one he ran to when the other angels would laugh at his large wings.
"And, maybe, Gabe, it is because you still care, somewhere deep down, deep deep down"
Gabriel wiped his hand down his face, trying to keep from getting all emotional cause that wasn't his thing. But damn it, the kid was right.
"Your falling kiddo"
"But for a good cause"
"Be it for a good cause or not, your still falling"
"I know this"
And at this moment in his entire existence, Gabriel had never felt so proud.
Soo? What did you think?
"Then you should know, as my former charge, I can not allow you to allow this to keep happening"
