'You're such a git, Potter'
He had heard those words a thousand times in the past 7 years, but this was different. No longer were they screamed at him and filled with hate and contempt. Now they were affectionate and accompanied with laughter. Things between them have changed ever since Dumbledore had appointed them has the Head students. James will forever be thanking that old wizard. If it hadn't been for him then James and Lily would have never even started talking unless it was for her to yell at him. Gone were the days of of staring at her laughing across the library. Instead he was the one causing her to laugh. James makes a fool of himself just to hear her laugh because to him, the laugh of Lily Evans is the most perfect sound on this planet no matter how much she may hate it. During meals they'd murmur jokes and comments so only the other could hear and while they pour over the patrol rotations they'd sit closer than necessary sometimes going as far Lily sprawling across lap to complain about the thoughtlessness of MacGregor, but the despite what most of the student body thinks and despite James deepest wishes he was not dating the redhead and James couldn't risk losing her after just getting her, even if it is just as friends.
Yes their dynamic had changed but the one thing that would never change is that James is completely in love with Lily Evans.
'Don't be such a arse, James.'
The first part of the phrase was said thousands of times before, but the second part, calling him James, was completely new to her. A lot of things about her relationship with James were new to her. The last time she yelled at him was when she had to finish a 2 foot Transfiguration essay and he literally had to drag her out of the library. The last time she called him a git was when he mumbled a terrible yet hilarious joke about a passing Hufflepuff. No matter where they were James always makes her laugh, there is something about him now. He is less arrogant and more responsible than ever before, but Lily wasn't sure if James himself changed or if it was simply her feelings towards the hazel-eyed boy that had changed. Sometimes when they hugged Lily found herself wishing that he would move down a few inches and just kiss her. Then she would remember that she had her chance, and that chance lasted 6 years. James was probably over her and she could not risk losing him as a friend. so as the days passed she suppressed those urges because she cared about him far too much.
Yes many things had changed between them, but the the thing that had changed the most is that Lily Evans is completely in love with James Potter.
