Rodney's Narrow Escape

Rodney walked carefully, trying hard not to make a sound. His arm ached from carrying his burden for so long but there was no way he'd put it down, not after all he'd been through. It was too precious.

Behind him footsteps echoed in the damp, dank hallway and he knew they were closing in on him. He thought he'd be safer down here in the bowels of the city. If he didn't find a place to hide soon they would take it away from him and he'd die.

He crouched down in a small corner, trying to make himself as small as possible. The footsteps drew closer and he waited, hoping they would pass by and not see him in the shadows. His legs burned from his terrified run and from squatting on the ground. The cold began to seep into his clothes but he didn't move. Too much depended on him not being found.

A few minutes later the group passed by him, their steps slow and shuffling. They all had one thought in mind, and it was finding Rodney. The mindless zombies wanted him and his cargo. Pulling it closer to him, he knew that time was running out.

He counted to a thousand after the sound of the mob's footsteps had ended, and then listed off all the prime numbers to five hundred before he cracked open the package. He took a moment to revel in the smell before removing a spoon from his pocket. Looking around one last time to make sure he was alone, he dipped his spoon into the final tub of Ben and Jerry's ice cream on Atlantis.

"You gonna eat all that by yourself, or are you willing to share?"

Rodney jumped, almost dumping the carton on the floor. He looked in the direction of the voice to find John Sheppard had stepped out into the weak light to stand next to Rodney. He leaned back against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest, almost unseen in the dark hallway.

Rodney looked up at his friend before sighing and holding out the ice cream. "I guess. Not even I can eat two litres of this stuff, but you'll need your own spoon."

"It just so happens I have one." From his pocket, John removed his own spoon and sat down to share the treasure.
