The Rules of Chance

"The world is cruel, and the only morality in a cruel world is chance. Unbiased. Unprejudiced. Fair."

Before the Joker had been let loose to wreak chaos in Gotham city, Harvey Dent, District Attorney, had been convince there were only two rules pertaining to chance.

One: that things really didn't happen by chance.

Two: that you had to make your own luck.

Of course, that was really because he had been so lucky up until then. He had a great family that supported him, a prestigious job as a leader in the community, he was giving back, and most of all, he had the greatest girlfriend in the world, Rachael Dawes, who he was planning on proposing to soon.

But all good things must come to an end.

And they did. But it wasn't his fault. No, not at all. It was that damned Joker. He would kill whoever let that crazy animal off of his leash.

He lost his everything – Rachael. He had to listen to her die for him.

Now he had nothing to live for. No one would want to look at him in a courtroom again anyways. He was scarred, on the inside and out.

The Joker had come seeking chaos, and that's what he found. He had torn up everything and everyone in his path, and a few who weren't. Harvey didn't see what the Joker had against him. All he had done was fight for justice. Of course, no one can understand the logic of someone that insane.

But Harvey was beginning to think there was some reason behind the Joker's actions.

There was no way to fight corruption; it would keep on coming back. You could only feed it. The justice system did that and Harvey swore to exterminate the ones who didn't fight for his justice, for Rachael's.

Harvey now understood that he was wrong before. The only rule of chance was that it never quite went your way when you really needed it to.
