Samantha-Jayde's Alibrandi Fill the Gap Assignment.
I tugged at the weed that was trying to infest my garden. It seemed to be stuck in the ground. I did not like these Australian weeds; they were tough and mean unlike back home. We had gardens in our window boxes because we had no room around the house. The weeds in the window boxes would be soft and gentle. They would come out with a simple pull.
I wiped my hand across my sweaty forehead as a shadow was cast over where I was squatting. "Do you need some help ma'am?" Came the familiar Australian voice I had grown to love. I slowly turned my head and looked into his sparkling eyes, feeling myself drawn to him.
I quickly shuffled aside, giving him room to grab the weed. In one quick tug the weed was out of the ground and into the pile behind us. I studied his arms as he went to work, pulling out some other weeds. I watched as the muscles tensed in different places when he pulled at a weed.
That's when I realised how thirsty I was. The Australian sun was hot and bore down on the both of us. "Lemonade?" I asked. It was one of the few words I knew in English. Even though it wasn't a full sentence, Marcus would understand what I meant. "Yes please," He said smiling. I loved his smile. It reached to his eyes. When he smiled it made me swoon.
I stood up quickly removing those thoughts from my mind. Walking at a quick pace towards the door of my home. Opening the door I felt all the hot air rush out. I kept all the windows open in the hot months for the house would become hot and humid very quickly. I pulled out a tray from my cupboard and two glasses from another, setting them on the tray. I turned pulling at the refrigerator's handle, opening it. Grabbing the jug of lemonade, I sat it on the tray before grabbing some ice cubes from the freezer, emptying them into the jug.
I carefully picked up the tray and walked to the door careful not to spill any. When I reached the door I paused for a moment taking in all that I saw. Marcus was sitting in the garden, his golden-brown hair falling in his eyes. His head lifted up and he saw me standing there. Butterflies entered my stomach under his soft gaze.
I sat the tray on the table, out the front of the door. Pouring us both a drink, I picked up the glasses bringing them out to where Marcus was working. Handing him his glass, his hand brushed against mine sending tingles up my arm. He chugged the cold drink down gratefully. "Thank you," He said lightly as I sipped at mine. "I brought some trees from the nursery. I thought you might want to plant them today." I smiled and nodded catching enough words to understand what he meant. I picked up his glass and carried it to the table as he went to retrieve the new trees.
With the two trees set down in the garden he set to work, not letting me help. He took off his shirt and grabbed the shovel to dig holes for the new saplings. Every time I went to help he would shake his head at me, saying something like; "Digging is not for a lady, Katia." So instead I went inside to grab my new camera, so I could at least take a picture. Stepping outside I pointed to the camera. "Marcus, Photo," I called. He turned his head and looked over. Taking a few steps towards me he sat the end of the shovel in the ground, placing his right foot on it. "One, Two, Three," I said proud of myself for speaking English. I pressed the button to take the photo as he smiled. The smile made my hands shake as I turned and walked inside placing the camera in its place.
When I turned around Marcus was standing there. His arms wrapped around me, making my white skin look whiter compared to his tanned skin. "I Love You Katia Alibrandi." He stated, brushing his lips into mine. I felt his lips smile under mine as I kissed back. I pushed a small wave of guilt down as I wrapped my arms around him.
