A Slytherin's Ambition
Life is full of opportunities.
Most people fail to see this, somehow. Opportunity and opportunity pass by with few taking notice, instead letting them slip lightly, easily, unobtrusively through their fingers.
I will always seize that opportunity, hold it firmly in my hands for all it is worth and extract all that I can. Life may not give everyone equal starting points, nor does it freely hand out power and success, but it does distribute opportunities. Power and success are determined by who realizes this and acts upon it. Many see chances and quietly allow them to disappear, believing that they don't need success or power. Don't need success or power! Laughable, foolish people. How can people be content with a limited amount of power, simply stop trying? I find my mind unable to comprehend such laziness, such acceptance of failures. Power is not a means to an end, it is an end within itself.
I have heard it said that he who sacrifices his conscience to ambition is burning a picture to obtain the ashes.
Only weak people, those who are afraid of power and success would say that. If this proverb is true, I would pick the ashes over the picture every single time. Give me a world in ashes.
My "fellow" prefect believes that such ambition makes me heartless, soulless.
I don't believe that I'm heartless.
I just believe that a good opportunity is one that is unlikely to appear again, and I'm not about to ruin one out of some misplaced, useless sense of honor or loyalty to others. There are only so many chances life will offer, whereas there are an endless number of people in the world. If I ruin my relationship with one, I will always be able to find a separate person with a similar, if not identical, personality and then use them to obtain my ends. No net loss. I don't believe in fate, or destiny, or soul mates or irreplaceable friendships. Friendships fade, but power and success do not. Some people have so-called irreplaceable friendships with others, but I don't want one, don't need one even if they do exist. Such a friendship seems almost dangerous, stifling, potentially ruinous for any stray opportunities that may appear.
One day, I will succeed, and those others will not, and they will have no one to blame but themselves. They may have their friendships, but I don't care, because I will have success, I will have power, and what else do you need in life? What else is life besides a competition for power?

A/N: According to Google, "He who sacrifices his conscience to ambition burns a picture to obtain the ashes" is a Chinese proverb. Anyway, reviews are always appreciated!
