This Story is set in the few years after Merry and Pippin become "Lords of the Manor" as it was, just a bit of an exploration of how our two favorite Mischief makers deal with growing up and taking responsibility. A one shot
The two old friends were taking Tea in The great Smials; they had not seen each other for many months and were looking forward to the exchange of news with each other. There had been many merry tales before a comfortable silence had come down upon them both.
"Pippin" Said Merry, taking out his pipe, as was his habit after eating a hearty meal.
"Yes Merry" Answered the young Took, following his older cousin's lead.
"Why don't we go to Farmer Maggots field anymore?"
"Why, Merry" Pippin exclaimed "I thought we had both agreed that we have grown out of that"
"Yes…" Yawned Merry, He filled it with pipe weed slowly and methodically before lighting it.
"That now that you are the Lord of Buckland and I am Thain of the Shire we have more responsibility now" Pippin said nervously, wiping away some cake crumbs from his waistcoat.
"Of course" Countered Merry, rolling his eyes.
"We are married for goodness sakes" Said Pippin, looking slightly agitated "Diamond would be greatly upset if she thought I was up to such childish activities"
"Absolutely" Agreed Merry "If Estella had cause to think such a thing..." Merry shuddered. He hated to think of what his Wife would do if she found out he had been up to mischief at his time of life, he loved his wife dearly but she had certain sternness to her.
"And the children think of the children. We must set a good example to them, we cannot let them think that this is acceptable behavior for anyone, let alone two Hobbits of such high standing" Pippin puffed out his chest slightly before cracking a grin at his Old friend.
"Indeed"
"Completely"
"I mean its not like we need to steal vegetables, we can have as many as we want, its unacceptable to take more then we need" Pippin said, trying to hold onto the argument.
"Unacceptable"
"Absolutely"
For a moment there was silence.
"What time do you want to meet then?" Merry asked raising a single brow
"Ten-Thirty by the old Oak Tree?" Pippin asked, as if arranging a business Meeting
"Fine by me." Merry laughed happily, finally, the first time since before the great quest, he felt young again.
Think our two favorite Mischief makers were responsible all the time when they grew up? Me nether!
