No-one ever thought of the rat. The rat that was stuck in the cage, left abandoned upon the seat. The rat that was fearing for its life - from the two vicious beasts that also occupied the same carriage. One knew him and the other, well, it just wanted to eat him. Yes, that witch's cat wanted to eat him and that scared him more than the other beast. That was only because the other beast, didn't know that he wasn't a rat. Well, he knew, but he just hadn't realized it yet. And that scared him more than anything.
You see the rat, the one no-one was paying attention too, wasn't as innocent as anyone thought. Scabbers wasn't an ordinary garden rat. No. He wasn't even a rat. In fact he was an illegal animagus. A man who was meant to be dead, but had spent the last 12 years trapped as a rat. But being a rat for 12 years, was better than the fate that had awaited him. Life in Azkaban prison. But he knew his time was running out.
First Sirius Black escapes Azkaban. You see Sirius Black was innocent, it was due to the rat that he was there, held captive for the past 12 years. And the dementors, who had just paid a visit, played it back to dear little Peter, so vividly just moments before hand. That night...
Peter stood there at the feet of his master. You would never have seen a more nervous man before, in fact he looked more like a child who was being told off by his mother. Some may say he was nervous due to being stood in front of he-who-must-not-be-named, but others may say it was because he was betraying his friends. The marauders. The best friends anyone could have. And what did Peter do? He betrayed them.
"They're ... They're at Godric Hollow master. The cottage, Potter Cottage in Godric Hollow. That's where ... where the Potters are hiding.' Peter's voice came out more like a squeaky mumble than a direction, and was hardly heard by the man in front of him. But he did hear it. And the damage was done. Voldermort had finally found out where the Potters were. He could finally defeat little baby Harry and take over. Voldermort's cold, heartless laugh filled the room that the men, in hooded cloaks occupied...
Peter was still shaking slightly at that memory. He had killed his best friends. Destroyed their family. In a way he destroyed his only family. Lily and James Potter were long gone. Sirius Black hated him. And Remus Lupin - well he thought he was dead.
Peter took that moment to look at his childhood friend. No-one would ever think, at first glance, that Remus Lupin was a werewolf. He was currently comforting Harry Potter, no werewolf would do that. Would they?
Well Peter knew better. He knew that when his friends were reunited, which was going to happen soon – Peter knew it, the truth would come clear. There would be no more running. No more hiding. Because if anyone ever hurt a marauder - they would pay. And poor little Peter had hurt more than one marauders, in more than one way. And, by Godric, was he frighten of what the calm, kind, Professor Lupin would do when he found out what he did.
