"Disparity"
Work: the Phantom of the Opera
Genre: General
Character(s): Raoul, the Phantom
Rating: PG
A/N: Just a character piece, along the lines of what I usually write. Review on your way out and let me know what you think!
His childhood was full of joy and ease. He had nurses and governesses and pets and all the companions a boy could want. He had the finest toys money could buy, and the most learned tutors in all of France there for his education. Never was he denied anything; such would be the case for his years to come as well.
His youth was not so bright. It is to him a blur of pain and jeers and anguish. He found his only consolation in music, his sweet mistress.
He is young and handsome, the paragon of early manhood. He possesses a charm which women adore and men wish they could emulate. With his looks, his pleasant countenance, and his money, he could have any woman in the world.
He is not so young, although perhaps the loneliness has aged him more than the passing of years. And his face? He is as a monster, and he hates himself and the world for it.
He is a kind and gentle soul by nature. He does not think twice in showing compassion, and a soft word is always on his lips. He is a true gentleman, a person of high morals and deep conscience.
Nearly all semblance of compassion has long since left him. Senses of right and wrong are distorted in his broken mind. There is only one for whom he has any tender thoughts, and such thoughts seem alien to him even as they pass through his mind, as beautiful and powerful as a symphony. His soul is as twisted as his face.
Life is wondrous for him. He is healthy, happy, prosperous, and, most importantly, in love. He counts himself a lucky man to have been so successful in his short life. He is carefree; he has never known sorrow or despair.
He personifies despair; he sings the song of solitude. Life has never held any joy for him, save when he is lost in his music or thinking of her.
Yes, he is in love. He thinks her the most beautiful creature on the earth, queenly and radiant. He sees her in sadness, and vows to rescue her from her thoughts of darkness.
He too is in love. He sees in her an angel, descended from an intangible heaven to bring his music to life. He idolizes her, she with the voice of a Siren and the beauty of Aphrodite.
He would die for her.
He would kill for her.
Fin.
