Luna's Fury
There was a reason Luna always seemed to be lost most of the time, a reason she did not-could not- seem to care.
It was because when she did manage to find herself caring about someone or something, she always ended up getting hurt. The alternate reason was that she was afraid, afraid to find herself in the position of being hurt again, afraid of losing control as she had only a few times previous. She feared her nature's anger-driven need for retribution after her trust had been betrayed.
This time she sad managed to both get herself hurt and lose her control at the same time. She could not bring herself to care about her loss of control either – fury and filled her mind already not leaving space for anything else.
Her father had once told her that one of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and be understood but that also left you vulnerable to the person you trusted enough to allow them to know you so well. The person you considered a friend and had shown the true you could do as much harm as good.
Her power had impetuously blazed through her and the Transfiguration Courtyard she stood within was covered with rapidly falling and twirling snow. The feeling of her cool ability rushing through her almost made her delirious; it would have had her anger allowed any space for it.
Neville had been as good as gold throughout their friendship. She should have known it was too good to last. He stood a few feet in front of her in the only area that was not covered in ice of snow but was wet from the presence of the chilled water coming into contact with his own influence over heat.
Their conflict was internecine. They were equally matched in terms of their ability, control and power.
Their abilities were so different yet so alike. The only major difference between them was her anger and his guilt.
The silence was one that existed not only on the inside but all around her as the other students waited with bated breath from the sidelines while shivering dangerously, warming charms having faded unnoticed. It was almost as if the entire castle was awaiting the results of their conflict.
"I'm not going to fight you Luna. I was wrong and I apologize. I did something that I should never have done to you or anyone else," Neville said with a sigh, looking defeated.
Luna was glad Neville had not announced the cause of their argument to the entire school and had managed not to make the situation much worse than it was. They both knew the reason, there was no need to specify.
Luna did not react. She only watched silently as Neville's warm bubble of protection from the cold dissolved into nothing as he release his hold over the warmth. He bagan to shiver not long afterwards. No one had been prepared for her snow, not in the beginning of Autumn.
She saw Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny standing to the side of the courtyard, they looked entirely uncertain of what they were meant to do.
She pulled back as her anger receded. The snow began to slowly disappear. There was a large exhale of relief as she turned and skipped away to her next class, mood back to normal.
They were all late for class afterall.
