"I crave you in the most innocent way. I crave to gaze into your eyes until I have discovered every inch of your soul and witnessed beauty in its rawest form."
— J. Greenaway
It first started when she was thirteen, when the Mikaelson family moved to the small pony town of Mystic Falls. She was sitting at her porch wearing a pink shirt and denim shorts, putting glitter in her new scrapbook filled with pictures of her friends and family, when she saw a moving truck and a big black SUV parking at the empty house across the street, sparking her curiosity. The thirteen year old Caroline saw through the tinted windows of the car five heads, and she wondered who they were.
The first out of the car was a blonde and elegant woman that she assumed was the mother – she looked like she was her mom's age after all - wearing black formal pants and a white shirt gazing at the house with a small smile, as if predicting the future. Right after her, a brunette boy that seemed eighteen came out, followed by another younger brunette boy. Despite the similarity of look, they acted like night and day. The older one was gazing at the neighborhood calmly, and the younger one was running around the lawn of the new house laughing out loud. The last two members leaving the car that caught her attention, a girl that looked her age, wearing pink shorts and top, and a boy a little older, looking regal even at his young age, both with blonde curls and blue eyes. The girl looked at her and waved with a grin, and Caroline waved back with a smile moving her eyes to the boy beside her. He looked like one of those teen actors that everyone fell in love with. He had full pink lips and a glint in his eyes and matching smirk that seemed to mean no good, but despite this, his face was relaxed. His eyes met hers and the smirk grew, showing a pair of dimples in his cheeks.
And that's the first time she saw Nik – and she never forgot that day.
The girl, Rebekah – or Bekah, as she insisted being called – was assigned to her class, and it wasn't long until they became best friends. They had a lot in common (like loving Nik, not that Rebekah knew, of course), and between school and playdates, she easily became a regular member of the Mikaelson family, their mother Esther always joked calling Caroline "her borrowed daughter" because she got along really well with every child in the house. She loved playing and gossiping with Bekah; loved joking around with Kol, pulling pranks on everyone; she enjoyed every moment of reflection and serious conversations with Elijah; and with Nik, well, she loved every single moment that she spent with him.
Everyone in the Mikaelson family, and even her own mother, knew about her crush on Nik, apparently she was not good in faking disinterest. Well, everyone, but Nik himself.
She ended up being close friends with Nik, even with him being four years older than her and his sister, and he was always there for her when needed, as she was always there for him, it was their motto –Always and Forever. Bekah always ranted saying that Nik had stolen her best friend, but the chemistry between them provided a fast and deep level of intimacy, they just fit.
The years went passing by, and with them came the hard parts of being best friends with Nik. She saw him dating a lot of girls, even falling in love with one - Tatia, the head cheerleader from high school-, listening when he wanted to talk about them and trying to give him a woman's point of view, consoling him when Tatia left him for another, skipping town saying that he wasn't enough for her, breaking his heart in the process; and after that, she endured seeing him jump from girl to girl. And every time that happened she became more and more sadder, until one day it all stopped. He got over Tatia and he didn't flirt with girls anymore.
It was five years after the day they first met, and she realized that he started looking at her differently, his touches lingered longer on her, his smile was warmer, and he didn't date anyone, and that made her curious, but she didn't say anything.
Two months later, Caroline and Nik were in his bedroom cuddling on his bed watching a movie like they always did Saturday after lunch, her mind buzzing at the fact that Nik was holding her so close that was almost suffocating her. It wasn't unusual the intimacy anymore, but it felt different, so she decided to ask him what was happening.
"Nik, can I ask you something?" Caroline said shyly, but with a serious tone turning her face to him. Nik paused the movie and turned to her.
"Of course, love. What is it?"
"What's going on with you? Why are you acting like this with me?" She asked lowering her eyes to her lap where her hands were resting, not wanting to face him while saying this. Not waiting for an answer, she continued. "I mean, you're looking at me strangely and you always have this smile on your face." She said pointing at his smile and poking one dimple, "and I just don't understand." She finished, still looking at her hands.
Nik was suddenly nervous; he knew what she was talking about, of course. The last year he started seeing her more than a friend; he saw her as the girl he was desperately in love with. He was stupid for not realizing before how great she was, so compassionate and full of light, he blamed Tatia and his massive heartbreak for ignoring what was right in front of him all the time. And now he was going to put his heart out there, with the hope that she returned his feelings. Picking up one hand in her lap, bringing to his lips and kissing her knuckles, he said:
"Can't you see, Care?" When she looked at him confused, he explained. "I'm falling for you".
It seemed like time stopped for both of them.
Caroline couldn't believe he said that, the boy she was crushing since she was thirteen was here, looking at her with eyes full of love declaring for her. He was falling for her. Nik saw the smile beginning to form on her face and sighed in relieve. She looked at him in his eyes and a blush started covering her cheeks. He took this as an acceptation of his feelings and his smile was splitting his face when he crushed his lips on hers.
"Nik… I think I love you too." She said with a happy glint in her eyes. Caroline was in heaven, but after a few seconds all her insecurities came forth and she frowned, thinking hard.
"What is it, Care?" Nik said seeing her frown and the light in her eyes fading. She looked at him with those beautiful big blue eyes and sighed.
"But Nik, I've never been with anyone, and you're like twenty two years old, and all the girls you dated before were your age, and I don't know how to do this, I mean, I kissed guys before, but that was it, I've never done anything else, and you're like, this old guy that must know everything and expect me to do stuff and I really..." She ranted not stopping, her hands gesturing between them.
"Calm down, sweetheart, you're rambling." Nik interrupted her rant, smiling at her. Picking her hands in his he said. "I don't care if you never done anything, it makes me happy that I'm your only one, and that I'm going to be the one that teaches you everything. You don't need to worry; I'm here with you because I fancy you, not another girl, only you."
"You fancy me?" She said shyly.
"Yes! Is that so hard to believe? You are beautiful, you're strong, and full of this blinding light." Nik said looking at her.
Caroline's answer was a smile brighter than the sun and she kissed him hard, slipping her hands from his and gripping his shirt, laying down on the bed, pulling him with her giggling. Nik deepened the kiss moaning at the contact, with one hand on her hips and the other one on her cheek, moving to her blonde curly hair. Caroline's right hand went to his back inside his shirt, and was caressing his lower back with little circles, making him crazy. All of a sudden, his bedroom door went flying open and they heard a scream, making Nik role off of Caroline, lying beside her and Caroline hide her face in his neck. Standing at the door was Rebekah laughing.
"Oh my God, better late than never, took you guys long enough." She screamed, and they all laughed.
