CURSE

Before, it pained her everytime she saw him smiled that smile.

He couldn't help it, though. She knew it very well. For ten years he probably had the same smile plastered on his face. He smiled through everything; grief and loss, hatred and agony. He had a really soft smile that made her uneasy sometimes. It was like a disease, like a curse that had lived inside him for years.

Her hands touched the shards of the smiling Noh mask softly.

She remembered, she once had a lot of doubts.

Didn't she always stay by his side? Didn't she try to ease his pain? Why couldn't he be happy? Wasn't she enough for him?

She was young and naïve, and the pain he had gone through was foreign to her. She had her grieving moments too, but when she saw his smile, everything she had gone through in life seemed to be nothing. She always got the thought that she was only a stranger who would become a small part of his life. That one day he would leave again.

But he was right, people changed. For the better or for the worse.

"Oro? You're still here? Why don't you go and rest, and let me take care of these shards? A pregnant lady is not supposed to run around the house."

She looked up and saw him smiling at her.

Lately it was different. She started to see different glimpses of light on his eyes, especially when he smiled. Sometimes he looked like he was at peace, or rather joyful, or even humorous. He never talked that much, but he seemed different.

She looked at the broken Noh mask, and then at him who were putting the sharp shards into a small rag.

"The curse is broken…" she whispered with a relieved smile.

Following her husband's suggestion, she stood up and went into the room.
