Chapter One

Fang's POV

We were flying over California, over the LA basin. We were doing an air show for the CSM, the organization Max's Mom had founded. They already had thousands of members. I suppose it was a great thing to be doing, helping stop global warming by doing something you love. But, it would be too easy for flyboys or whatever new upgrade there is to try and get us. Literally thousands of people came to see us, and I'm not surprised. Who wouldn't want to watch six flying bird kids and a flying dog?

I saw Gazzy make squealing brake sounds as he slowed down and started dropping like a rock.

"Hey! Watch gravity in action!" he said. He did look kind of funny with his hair all pointing upwards from the wind. I saw Max roll her eyes, and yell at Gazzy:

"Gazzy stick to the choreography! This is a paying job! Don't blow it!" and I almost smirked, wondering if doughnuts counted as payment. But still, what would we do with money if we had any? I heard the whole audience gasp as they saw Gazzy quickly losing altitude, before he soared back into position. Wow, way to be melodramatic. I flew forwards to get in line with Max, who was flying gracefully over the stadium below us. I still wasn't sure where we were in relationship terms; we'd need to have a talk sometime.

"Yo," I said, and saw her smile in a way that lit up her face beautifully.

"You enjoy being a spokesfreak?" she asked. I gave a tiny smirk and shrugged, the whole flock got food and a place to stay each night, and were relatively safe, it was easily worth it.

I shrugged "It's a job," I replied.

"Yep, so long as they don't worry about pesky child labour laws," she agreed.

It seems as if the avian DNA cancels out being a child and normal laws didn't apply to us, which I wasn't going to complain about. Just then I saw the panicked expression on angel's face and had enough time to think "Oh crap!" before she barrelled into Max, knocking her downwards by about a foot. She started yelling at Angel, asking what she thought she was doing. But then I heard the all too familiar whine of a bullet as it passed over me, through the spot where Max's head had just been. I heard Total yelp, and he span in the air. Angel had saved Max, but Total had taken the hit!
