A/N this is set during Nameless, Faceless. What if Reid's injury was more serious than he let on?

Morgan stepped out of Hotch's hospital room.

"Hello?" he asked.

"Hi, is this SSA Derek Morgan of the BAU?" a female voice said through the phone.

"Speaking, and who is this?"

"I'm Riley Jenkins at Harrington Hospital. I'm calling regarding Dr. Reid's personal affects. I'm so sorry for your loss."

"My loss? What do you mean my loss?"

"Oh dear, has no one told you sir? Dr. Reid was shot and he died on the way to the hospital."

"What? He's dead? How could no one have told us… I'm sorry but I can call you later?"

"Sure."

Morgan slumped against the wall with his head in his hands. This couldn't be happening. This couldn't be happening…

Pull it together. You have to tell the team.

"Hey guys." He called them. "Can I talk to you for a moment?"

They all stepped outside. When they saw his grief stricken face, they knew something was wrong.

"Did he find Haley and Jack?" JJ asked.

"No, it's Reid. He… he died."

The team stared at him in shock.

"No." said JJ. "If this is your idea of some sick joke Morgan…"

"JJ, I'm not kidding."

Emily had tears running down her face.

Garcia sobbed desperately. "N-no!" she said shakily.

Rossi stared at the ground.

JJ looked back and forth between them, willing this to be a dream or a joke.

"It wasn't that bad? Was it? Did we really leave him there to die? This is all my fault. If I had just been there like I was supposed to." Emily cried.

"Emily, listen to me this is not your fault."

Morgan was still shocked.

"What are we going to tell Hotch?" asked Rossi.

Hotch knew something was wrong when he saw them crying. Fear struck him. Were Haley and Jack okay?

At this point the team re-entered.

"What happened?" he demanded.

Emily answered. "We didn't tell you because we didn't think it was too serious. We didn't want to make you stressed. Reid was shot this morning. We just found out that he… he d-died on the way to hospital." Her voice cracked.

Hotch couldn't believe it. All this time he had spent worrying about his family and himself while one of his agents died…

All alone.
