James had always found Serverus Snape to be an ugly boy. His hooked nose and greasy hair really didn't do him any favors. James often found himself repulsed by the boys looks and turned them into a way of making himself feel good.

James knew he was handsome and it made him cocky and complacent, he always thought he could get his way because of his good looks or because of any other dazzling attribute to his personality.

He often found himself making fun of Snape alongside his friends, especially picking on the way he looked. One day that changed.

James had been mocking Snape along with Sirius and Peter when Lily walked down the corridor with Remus on patrol duty. Snape was an angry red flushed colour whereas the three boys were splitting themselves with laughter. Their cruel words had hit home with Snape and they always did. He shied away in the corner, skulking into the wall when Lily started having a go at James.

She shouted at him, calling him a bully but he'd heard it all before. He laughed her comments and chides off. Nudging his friends in the arm in a playful manner when she stopped talking mid-rant. He looked over at her in surprise and say tears lining her eyes.

"Lily-?" He asked softly, but she pushed past him, grabbing Snapes arm to lead him away from the marauders. "You're nothing more than a bully Potter!" She spat at him, an angry note clear in her tone. James went to protest but she carried on. "You know nothing of beauty James! For all your good looks you have nothing, when I look at you I don't see a handsome boy. I see a coward. Hiding behind the imperfections of others, and you dare to call yourself a Gryffindor!" On that note she stormed off, her Slytherin friend in tow.

From that point on, James realized what it truly meant to be ugly. Looks didn't even come into it…
