There were people fighting everywhere she turned. She was constantly deflecting curses and hexes as she made her way through the throng of people. All the different coloured lights could almost be called beautiful if only she hadn't known how deadly they were. She had been separated from Harry for some time now, and she was getting extremely worried. In all their history together, she had never been as scared for him as she was at that moment.
She continued moving forward, practically running at this point, hoping to catch sight of the raven-haired wizard. That's when she saw who she thought was Harry dart past the border of the Forbidden Forest. 'What in the world is he doing?', she thought. She rushed to follow him before she lost sight of him once more. Once she passed into the trees she was amazed at how quiet it was. It almost seemed as though there was a silencing charm surrounding the trees. Her eyes darted left and right, but it was useless. There was no sight of Harry. With a heavy sigh, she decided to venture just a bit further into the forest in hopes of finding him.
"Excellent. This is just excellent," she muttered sarcastically.
Just then she caught sight of flashes of light ahead of her. Worried that Harry was caught up in a duel she hurried forward. She didn't find Harry engaged in a duel. What she found instead, however, completely surprised her. Draco Malfoy was dueling Bellatrix Lestrange. Judging from the variety of colours she was seeing it was a very vicious duel and Draco was losing.
"Blood traitor! How dare you turn your back on the Dark Lord? You are completely useless, just like your spineless father!"
Draco ignored her, seemingly concentrating too hard to respond to her taunts. The witch's high pitched screeching had Hermione completely frozen in shock as she was remembering her own time with the insane witch. She was pulled from her shock when she heard Bellatrix shout the beginning of the killing curse. She knew this was the end for Draco. Bellatrix had overwhelmed him to the point where he was only defending himself and was not able to get off any offensive spells.
"Avada Ke – "
"Stupefy!"
She put as much power as she could into that spell. It hit the witch straight on the chest, sending her flying into a tree. As she slumped to the ground, unconscious, Hermione lowered her wand and turned to face Draco. He was staring at her as if he had no one who she was.
"Why did you do that? I would have thought you would have let her kill me."
"Do you really think that? You may be a complete and utter prat, but anyone with eyes can see you don't want to be a Death Eater. Besides, consider it payback for not identifying us at the Manor."
"Fat lot of help that was to you."
Later, when the battle was long over and her thoughts were clearer, she would look back on this exchange and realize he looked at her with guilt in his eyes.
"It helped Harry and I'm grateful for that."
"Of course. Nothing is more important than Precious Potter."
She sighed. She really didn't have time for his attitude.
"Can we just get out of here before she comes around and finishes what she started?"
Without a backwards glance at his aunt, Draco began to make his way toward her. He walked past her, towards the edge of the forest. She made to follow him when he suddenly stopped and turned back around.
"This changes nothing."
'Ungrateful prat,' she thought.
"Of course not," she answered, rolling her eyes.
Satisfied with her answer, he nodded and they both made their way out of the forest. She had wasted too much time already, and it was imperative that she got her focus back on her mission.
