Written for L, because nobody should be allowed to be THAT adorable!
BELIEF
By JustAkiko
Someone had once told him that when the time came, he would know his final move before he even made it. Not through logic or numbers or equations, just some sort of sixth sense, some gut feeling that whatever move it was would inevitably be his last.
L had never believed it.
He believed in the percentages and decimal points that fluttered around his brain, making complex patterns that painted out the path towards justice. He believed in Watari's gruff rumbling voice and the small plate of fruit he would always find hidden amongst his usual array of sweets and sugary treats. He believed in the tangible, the real, in the bells that rang in his head and the intuition that had caught him numerous criminals before this one. They may be unexplainable, astounding even, at times but these things were real, experienced, and that's what counted. He was the consummate agnostic, so until the theory was proved, L would move forwards regardless.
It was no great surprise then, when the screens before him suddenly flashed white, branding his obsidian eyes with those three fateful words 'ALL DATA DELETED'. That heavy weight he'd been carrying around all day, the one that made his head pound, his eyes dull and forced him out into the pouring rain immediately made sense. The sadness that he'd been loath to explain out loud came into sharp focus and threatened to swamp him in what he realised would be his final moments. But nothing could consume the overwhelming knowledge that it was over, that his final move had been made and despite his best attempts he had lost the most important game of all.
His mouth moved automatically, barking unnecessary orders, even as his eyes slid around to look at the only other person in the room who would understand what was happening. His gaze stopped, catching little more than a shirt sleeve, when he felt the slight pressure of fingertips brush his shoulder, in something that could have been comfort or could have been contempt.
Seconds later it was over.
The slip into darkness was surprisingly painless; perhaps his brain had been shutting down unnecessary files in preparation all day? The words of his predecessor came back to him and, had he had the strength, L would have smiled. Instead he simply stared upwards, watching the face of his first and only friend disappearing into a world of blindness, with that so-concerned look painting his handsome features a guilty shade of pale.
L's lingering thoughts wondered if he had noticed sooner, believed easier, would he have changed the game plan. His final thought wondered if that would have made any difference at all.
