Prologue:

Lord Persevil walked quietly down the alley. He had a quick step because he knew he was dead if his wife found he was out late again. He smiled at the thought of his wife. He loved her so much, but she had no clue about his second life. He sighed and thought, not the first time, if he should tell her. He came around the corner and was almost onto the main road. He was still deep in thought when he heard a noise.

He spun around and pulled out his rapier. He chuckled. It was only a stray cat. Persevil began walking again humming a tune that he couldn't remember the name of. He rounded another corner and was almost in sight of his house. Then he heard the telltale sign of boots on the cobblestone. Persevil spun around for the second time holding his rapier at the ready. He knew the flimsy excuse for a blade was no real defense but it was better than nothing. He looked around, but didn't see anything.

Then he felt it. The most excruciating pain he had ever felt. It was both hot and cold and he let out a muffled scream as a hand closed over his mouth. Persevil began to thrash around but the small dagger in his back would not loosen. He began to grow frantic as he spun around trying to see his attacker. Persevil never got the chance as he faded from consciousness and life.

The assassin pulled out his magical blade and put it back into the folds of his cloak. He gave a small smile and turned and walked away.
