To anyone who was not from the 4077th Mash unit based over in Ouijongbu, south Korea it would appear to be two comrades out for a drink whilst on leave. To anyone who was from the 4077th it would seem rather odd that Hawkeye Pierce was even considering spending his well earned R and R with this person. It would seem more than odd actually because as far as that mash unit was concerned Hawkeye Pierces opinion of this person was lower than chewing gum stuck on someone's combat boot. However these two were not at the 4077th, in fact they were not even in Korea and so it would appear that the rules had changed. Dramatically changed in fact.
In Tokyo if one knows the right places to visit then a person can get away with anything. It helps even more when you're an officer. So for example if two officers started to kiss each other then the enlisted men may look and comment to each other but it would not go any further. Especially in this type of establishment. The fact that they were in this particular establishment meant that the enlisted men where after the same type of activities as it were.
If anyone back in camp were to find out then they would not be surprised that Hawkeye Pierce was kissing other men. It was secretly suspected that he was homosexual. Nobody could prove it of course, even though few had tried. It was ,after all, just Hawkeye being Hawkeye. However if his date for that evening were ever caught then that would send shockwaves throughout the camp. It would be devastating especially for the nurses. Not that they would want anything to do with this particular person, at least not those with any semblance of sanity, no simply because if their head nurse caught wind of this then their lives would be made very uncomfortable indeed. Plus the fact that Frank Burns was as military and, lets be honest, homophobic as people could get. Well that's what Frank would have people believe anyway. That was the way Hawkeye liked things to be.
The two had ,by this stage of the proceedings , made it back to the hotel room. Hawkeye having one too many martinis and Frank drunk by his second beer. That was the way Hawkeye liked him though as they stumbled into the room. It made getting the main event underway a lot easier. And it had been too long since this happened. It only ever happened in Tokyo, that was the way it had to be. For everyone's sake.
In the morning things would revert back to the same. Hawkeye would go back to hating Frank and Frank would go back to Margaret and eventually Louise. However tonight was their night, tonight Hawkeye would like Frank and Frank may like himself. Tonight Hawkeye would hold Frank just like he wanted his mother to a lifetime ago. Tonight Frank would feel safe enough to let the real him out, and as usual Hawkeye would play the teacher. But that was for one night only.
Because after all what happens during the night is kept in the shadows. In the harsh reality of day for Frank, nothing will have changed. Frank is okay with that though because he has experienced something representing love, and that's all Frank ever craves. No matter what the personal price is to him.
