Disclaimer: I do not own Les Miserables. This is merely something that I wrote in class.
A/N: My first piece for Les Miserables. Also my first poem. Hope you like it~

Just One

I have never questioned my morals.
I have never wondered about that higher being they call God.
I have never seen reason to stray from my straight, unbending, unvarying path.

I have always followed what is the law. I have never followed what is right.
I have always ignored my feelings. I have never ignored my orders.
I have always chased criminals. I have never let one escape.

Until now.

Now, I question my morals. Was I right to let him go?
Now, I wonder about God. Was he out there? Is he out there?
Now, I stray from my path. Under such circumstances, could I have done otherwise?

I have broken the law. I don't know if what I did was right.
I listened to my feelings. I disobeyed my orders.
I followed a criminal. I let him go.

Just one. Just one criminal, more infamous and yet more innocent than any other.
Just one. Just one failure, a single time I didn't do my job.
Just one. Just one step and I will never chase another criminal.
And never let one escape again.

*** End ***

A/N: We've been reading Les Mis in class, and our assignment today was to write a poem about someone in the story, although many people didn't follow that. I wrote about Javert, and then realized I could post it… so I did ^^ Feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading~
