It's all he ever wanted; everything good he'd ever had; all he'd existed for, and it was gone – severed by a frightened soldier, a good man corrupted beyond recognition by fear.
Cut off with a dirty iron knife in the cold, dark, rain-sodden night.
The weight was too heavy to bear as his little brother slumped into his tight embrace.
"Hey, look at me. It's not even that bad, all right? Sammy? Sam!"
He knew he was lying. It was worse than bad – but his brain stuttered and stalled at the knowledge, wouldn't allow it to filter through. Not yet.
