Brandon's Song

Marianne looked from the sheets in her hand to the man who had handed them to her. "I think you overestimate my abilities," she said at last.

"I think not," Colonel Brandon replied as he attempted to smile and he belatedly remembered something. "You do have an instrument do you not?"

"A small one," Marianne told him.

As Brandon told her about his own Grand piano he wished he could invite her to his house to play it instead of implying it but he knew propriety couldn't let it happen. He would have to be content with hearing her play at Barton Park.

Marianne practiced the song every day until she was able to play it perfectly and she was rewarded with warm praise from Brandon he told her that he always known the she would pull it off very well and with her flair for adding something of her own to every piece she played he had known that it would be heavenly.

Marianne was unhappy.

Willoughby had gone to town and it seemed like he was never coming back. Her life was over…unless she could somehow convince Mama and Elinor to go to London. Even with her impractical brain, Marianne knew that this was not going to happen; they couldn't afford to go to London.

Marianne sat down at the piano and began to play the songs that she and Willoughby had spent hours singing together. Oh, how she missed him. As she played the last notes of 'Loch Lomond', Marianne found herself continuing easily into Chopin or Brandon's song as she thought of it.

Elinor watched her sister smile for the first time in days. She thought of asking her what was making her smile but she didn't want to interrupt her instead she contented with the knowledge that Marianne would find the strength to go on.
