Mistakes
I was at home when the phone suddenly rang.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Esme," a voice I knew too well replied, "It's been too long, I miss you."
"Charlie? Is that you?" I looked around the room, making sure that none of my talented children were around, "This is foolish, and you know you shouldn't call me. Although, I do miss you too. Shit," I said as I saw Edward and Bella emerge from the top of the stairs. I started to think to myself, cupcakes, cupcakes, cupcakes, to try and prevent my son from reading the thoughts I never wanted him to hear.
"Thank you for calling, I have to go," I said to Charlie through a muffled voice before hanging up.
I looked up as Edward and Bella walked down the stairs, arm in arm. Edward studied me, through confused eyes before letting out a soft sigh. While Bella smiled a welcoming smile before flipping her hair out of her face.
"Bells," Edward began to say to my daughter-in law, "You're looking … thirsty, why don't you go out for a hunt?"
I saw a hint of confusion in Bella's eyes as she nodded and departed easily out of the door. I quickly turned away from my son and made my way to the lounge room. "No," he exclaimed, I turned around, certain that he knew where I was spending my nights. "Esme," he said, "I know."
I felt my knees collapse under my weight as a flood of tears poured from my eyes, "I'm so sorry, Edward," I sobbed, "It didn't mean anything, it was just one time. Charlie means nothing to me, I'm not in love with him, I still love Carsile as much as ever."
"What?" Edward asked, stunned, "Esme, what in the world are you talking about, what is this a joke?"
"No, no, no, I said I was – wait a minute, you didn't know – oh shit."
"YOU SLEPT WITH CHARLIE?" Edward roared, shaking the house slightly. At that moment, I saw Bella step into the front door, crying.
"You slept with my father?" She asked me, her lips pursed slightly.
"I'm so, so sorry." I replied. And then it hit me, neither of them had known before, I brought this all on myself …
