AN: REDO of my original version of this. Warning, this is not a happy story. I was in a rather bleak mood. This is based off of the 2004 MOVIE version in which Erik just walks away and disappears. Only that does not happen.

Lethal Love

Erik fell to his knees by the lakeside with his last broken-hearted cry...to Christine, to the uncaring world above, to God if there was one...he didn't care who heard him. His whimpers became more pained as his body suddenly began to tremble then violently writhe as a deadly spasm attacked his heart.

Perhaps Death is finally coming to take poor Erik away...Christine, Christine, if she cannot love me, then I am better off dead...please...I do so wish to die...let me die!

He remembered her leaving all over again and let out a whimper of excruciating pain. Why was he ever born if he was going to exist in the most misery that any human being had ever experienced? No, the most misery that any human being had ever, or would ever, and probably NEVER experienced. Who could possibly understand what it was like to have a face that a mother could not bear to look at, a face that kept him hidden from humanity? Who could possibly relate to the very depths of intelligence his mind held, which made every emotion intensify to an excruciating level? Rejection literally felt like a knife in his heart. Loneliness was a dull, icy numbness through his body. Rage took the form of thousands of needles penetrating his skin everywhere until he could stand it no more and he lashed out violently. Love was a fire consuming every fiber of his being, which made him act out in insane ways to try to conquer it and have it returned. And still, even with his last attempts at this, he lost. But now, unlike the others, Death…Death was serene.

Erik could feel his pulse begin to slow, until it was a faint whisper. He opened his clutched fist to stare at the sparkling ring Christine had given back to him. This shot another rough blow to his weak heart.

God, how I love you! No one shall ever love as fiercely as I have loved you, Christine! Erik may be miserable for eternity, but he wishes you happiness forever and a day!

He filled his mind with memories of himself with Christine, when he first sang to her, the way she looked at him with innocent wonder, when he first held her in his arms, how she almost melted with him, and then when she first kissed him...it was beautiful.

With that last thought, that last breath, Erik's soul (he indeed had one) took flight.

A few moments later, the mob entered, little Meg leading them. She looked about the cavern, until her eyes settled on something rather disturbing, and she gasped.

There, lying on the banks of the lake, a ring within his right hand, was the body of Erik, with the most peaceful expression he had ever had before in his tragic life.

At last he was free.
