AN: My first attempt at FFVII fic...? I feel it is not up to par with others of this genre, and for that I apologize. Thank you to all who read this.
No Matter What
And she's bathing in light
Head bowed, her long locks lace her thin face, curling, twisting down, rivulets of chestnut. She clasps her hands, bringing them to her chest, and whispers lyrical phrases of hope and life. An angel within the shadows, a glimmer in the darkness of one's heart–she flickers.
Red.
She falls.
Her back is to his, dainty shoulders feathering against him. "I don't blame you."
"But... but I couldn't protect you," and his voice breaks against the stillness, shatters it, and he cannot fathom finding every piece.
"You did nothing wrong," she whispers. Her words drift into him, filling the crevices, warming him and leaving him longing for more. "You saved me."
Eyes meet for one last time.
Fear. What cannot be undone. The promises left unkept. The memories that will never be shared.
Acceptance. This was bound to happen. Weren't they prepared for anything? Nothing–life, love, faith–lasts forever.
Confusion. The smiles from moments ago melt. What now? His head is screaming.
...love?–but he would never know for sure.
He steps forward. The flowers crush under his weight.
The green fades, the colors dull, her presence ceases to be.
"See you later." The phrase haunts him as he leaves the church.
A flower wilting, its pale petals shrivel as the life drains from it.
Her body is limp. The lively sheen in her gaze is gone. Once rosy cheeks, now white and void of any sign of the beauty they'd possessed, are coated in warm tears.
His cries echo, of the whys and hows, of the life she will never experience, as he feels his fragile foundation crumble beneath him.
Every night he dreams. And every night, he is unable to save her.
Some things cannot be changed.
