This Life Thing
The gaang sits around their typical campfire, and Zuko brings up a new topic.
"And now we have Suki, that dude, and Dad!!" Sokka finished the story of the adventure. "And one of those girls with Azula completely dissed her!"
Everyone clapped at the story's finale. Zuko appeared to be deep in thought, but everybody pretended not to notice while they discussed or reenacted scenes from the story.
"Zuko?" Katara spoke finally, "What are you thinking about?"
"You know what?" Zuko said to the whole group, "This is a pretty great thing we've got going on here." He looked around at confused faces. "I mean, sure there were casualties, unbearable events, and horrible people, but look at us now. We've broken out of an inescapable prison. The Avatar and I learned to firebend from dragons."
"AANG!" Katara and Aang yelled at the same time. They blushed.
"Aang." Zuko corrected himself. "Anyway, I-"
"Yeah, I see it." Sokka said. "Maybe we are doing pretty well. I mean look at us, gathering our own food and stuff. I guess our lives of necessary independence paid off!"
All the unimportant characters that nobody cares too much about agreed ("that dude" Haru, Teo, The Duke)
"Yeah. I always wanted this life, and now I lead it with these great people!" Toph joined.
"This may not be so bad!" Aang exclaimed, caught up in the spirit.
"You did do a good job of saving me and traveling," Suki added. Everybody looked at Katara.
"Yeah, well, maybe we do have something going for us. Maybe this will be good. Thanks Sokka."
"Sokka?!" Zuko exclaimed.
"Fine, thanks Zuko…" Katara mumbled.
"But, you know, we still don't stand a chance at defeating the Fire Nation yet." Zuko said. Mumbles of "Yeah" and "True" could be heard, as the unlikely source of optimism became a pessimist once more.
