Once Kara left, Alex's room was suddenly still and quiet. She drew the shades and sat down heavily on her couch, staring blankly at the wall. When she had talked with Max, sitting on the pavement and pressing her coat to the hole in his shoulder, she had forgotten the world. She had forgotten the battle, her sister, her role as a lead agent. It had just been her and Max in the world, telling each other that they loved each other.

Alex buried her face in her hands. She had kissed him then, slow and sweet and wonderful, and it had been one of the most amazing, but at the same time, scariest, moments of her life. But still, she had forgotten her duty, and she couldn't do that.

Still, Max was alive, and that was partially also her duty. He had known that he could have died taking the bullet for her, and she had known that she wasn't going to let that happen. If he had died... Alex refused to think about it.

Kara, bless her, hadn't even been upset that Alex had abandoned her duty to go save his life. If anything, she was more concerned that her older sister had fallen for Max in the first place. Hank had been... a bit harder on her after everything had calmed down.

"Agent Danvers!" Hanks voice rang out throughout the entirety of the main room of the DEO. A few people looked up from what they were doing, and most of the noise died down. Alex grimaced, considered running, and slowly turned on the spot.

"You abandoned your post, and left your sister and fellow agents undefended, to do what? To save someone whom you have stated many times that you hate's life?"

Alex flushed at the condescending tone of his voice, paired with the many eyes on them. "Can we talk about this somewhere else, please?" She murmured, and, without waiting for an answer, strode her office. "Hank, I know I shouldn't have left my post, but Max was bleeding out on the ground. And- I... I don't hate him. He-" She stopped, not quite sure how much she wanted to say.

Hank narrowed his eyes. "Is there something going on with you two that I should know about?"

Alex bit her lip and looked away. Hank could either take her confession well, or prevent her from ever working on the field with Max. She was leaning toward the latter. "I- No, nothing."

Hank stared her down, and Alex looked right back steadily, though everything in her was aching to look away. "Alex. What you do in your personal life is, well, your personal life. But if it is affecting your performance on the field, then that is my business."

"It won't happen again." Alex promised, before turning and walking out of her office and out of the DEO. It wouldn't happen again... she hopped.

But as she sat on her couch, Alex had to wonder, would it be the last time she sacrificed her duty to save him?
