Daisuke has never been one to be subtle.
That is why Iori is staring at him, Takeru is choking on his Diet Coke (Daisuke has never been able to understand how the blonde could enjoy the taste), Miyako is gasping quietly, Hikari is holding her hands over her mouth to cover a knowing smile, and Ken is blushing wildly.
Daisuke has just planted a not-so-subtle kiss on Ken's lips and declared his not-so-subtle crush on the indigo-haired boy to the assembled group of Chosen Children, whom all but one had already guessed he had a crush, but had not known the crush was returned with equal sentiments.
The one who had not guessed - or, maybe, perhaps, had already guessed but chose to ignore any evidence of the guess being correct - will go home and cry tonight, shedding clear drops of a lost cause onto her pillow before falling asleep to wistful dreams, which can erase the occurrences of the previous evening for her heart's benefit but cannot erase the actual love shared between her dark-haired knight and the vibrant court jester.
She will be consoled later, but, for now, the newly-revealed and therefore vulnerable couple must be assured that their friends will stand by them, no matter how their hearts choose life-companions.
Daisuke and Ken stir uncomfortably in the awkward silence following their kiss and confession, eyes suspicious, defensive, and hopeful simultaneously, until they are embraced from all sides by their friends in a mad rush of excitement for the new couple. Squeals and congratulations welcome them back into their safe-zone of unconditional love and friendship, and even Miyako, who is holding back tears, offers a quiet congratulatory comment and a timid smile. She will have time to mourn her shattered crush on the child prodigy later, when she is alone with her thoughts. For now, she must not break the reassuring atmosphere surrounding her nervous friends.
When Miyako cannot help herself and she glances uncertainly at Daisuke, she is surprised to find him staring at her with a gentle, almost concerned gaze.
He strides across the room and says, quite tactlessly, "Hope I didn't just crush all of your dreams about marrying Ken."
Miyako's face goes blank and pales momentarily for a few heart-stopping seconds, but regains its color when Daisuke embraces her and whispers in her ear, "You'll find someone who can love you back. I'll even help you."
"Really?" she whispers back, wondering if her friends have noticed they have been hugging and whispering for longer than necessary.
She feels his nod against the side of her head and smiles as he pulls back to grin at her. He squeezes her shoulder once and then turns to walk back to his boyfriend, who has been eyeing them apprehensively ever since he saw Daisuke walk in that direction. Daisuke whispers something to Ken and Ken sighs, as if in relief, and shoots her an apologetic smile (whether it is apologetic because he can't return her love or because Daisuke does not know the meaning of subtlety she may never know).
Perhaps it is a good thing that Daisuke is not subtle.
Perhaps it will save Miyako's heart in the future. Perhaps it will save his and Ken's relationship with each other. Perhaps it will save his own life.
One thing is certain: If Daisuke were subtle, Daisuke would not be Daisuke, and that would be a tragedy within itself.
