The moon rose, a creamy white orb illuminating the dark sky.

A girl sat in the darkness, her only light the heavenly bodies that slowly whirled above her. An open book sat on her knee, the spine coarse buckram and the pages glimmering faintly, gently reflecting the moonlight. The girl's eyes darted across the page and for a second her fingers moved as paper was turned.

The crickets finally began to cease their chirping. The moon rose higher, and the stars helped light the dew that dusted the cooling grass. A summer night's breeze swept through the branches of the nearby trees, rustling the leaves and soothing those who felt the terror of the night shadows.

The girl ended the page, gently laid the book some distance from her, then lay down on the cool dew-swept grass with a grateful sigh. Her eyes closed in peace, though she sensed the moonlight through the lids. Slowly, she fell asleep; the stars twinkled on her dusky hair. Mortal eyes could not have seen the flickering of lights that matched the timing of the stars, but it was there. The girl murmured something and turned to one side, damp with dew and starlight. Her head lay nestled in the crook of one arm.

The back door opened, then slammed, and another girl bobbed into the night, bearing a folded blanket like a peace offering. With almost secretive kindness, the blanket was unfolded and tossed over the sleeping girl in the grass, who smiled a little and pulled the fabric closer to her. A moment later the back door closed again, more gently this time.

An owl hooted nearby, then fell silent. The wind rustled the branches of the trees again, murmuring a song of rest to the girl. The breeze soon desisted, and all was still. Far above, the moon climbed ever higher.
