Chapter One:

It was Thursday, and everyone was supposed to be out of the school building already. Well, everyone but the people who had sports practice and Logan. He was trying to finish a science project, and Logan was almost done with it. But there was something he couldn't get right. Logan would ask for help, but the teacher had left for a couple minutes and Logan was the only one in the classroom. Well, that was until someone came walking in the classroom. Logan's seen him around a couple times and the boy was pretty popular around school, especially since he was the captain of the hockey team. Plus, he's been in a lot of Logan's classes throughout our whole lives, including elementary school.

"Uh, he'll be back in a couple minutes, if you want to wait." Logan said, without looking up a second time.

"Okay," The boy said. Logan wasn't sure what he was going to do, but the next time that he spoke he was a lot closer to Logan. "So, what is that?"

"It's my science project." Logan looked up, and the boy was sitting right in front of Logan. "I need to get an A on this, or I won't get into the college I want."

"Ah, so you must be Logan Mitchell." How did he get that from a simple statement?, Logan thought.

"Uh, yeah. How do you know who I am?"

"Just because we have nothing in common, Logan, doesn't mean I don't know who you are."

"Yeah, but you made it seem like you got my name from me saying something that has nothing to do with my name."

He leaned closer to Logan, and Logan could feel his heart rate speed up. "Maybe I've been paying attention to you."

"Have you been?" Logan wasn't sure where this was headed, but it made his heart race faster than before.

"Maybe; what would you say if I was?" he leaned in closer.

"Uh, that it's kinda creepy."

"Not flattering?" he leaned in even closer. He was so close, that Logan could feel his breath on his own lips.

"Uh, well, I – uh…" before Logan could say anything else, the teacher walked into the classroom. And James practically sprang halfway across that room.

"James! What are you doing here?"

James walked over towards the teacher's desk and started asking him questions. But Logan wasn't paying attention to their conversation, or his own project – that he needed help with. Instead Logan was trying to figure out what had just happened between James and him. He wasn't gay, was he? No, he wasn't. Because that would ruin his popularity and reputation. Him being gay wasn't what brought that on, he was just trying to make Logan feel bad for thinking that he was going to kiss him. And then he was going to make fun of Logan with his friends, for wanting to kiss him.

Instead of staying there, Logan decided to clean up his stuff and ask for help tomorrow after school. As he was finishing with clean up, Logan noticed that James was looking over at him while the teacher was saying something probably really important. He smiled at Logan when he noticed that Logan was looking at him. Logan could feel the blush that was creeping up on his cheeks, and looked down to try and hide it from him. But Logan knew that he saw, because he heard James's laugh all the way over where he was standing.

Logan quickly made his way towards the door, when he was finished with cleaning up. But before Logan could make it out of the room, he heard the teacher tell James that he could come in tomorrow after school for help with his science project. Which Logan wasn't sure if he was excited about or not.

That had been a couple weeks ago, and Logan hadn't even heard anything from anyone about what had happened between James and himself. It was actually really confusing, because that's what Logan had been anticipating when James didn't even acknowledge him the next day after school. Which actually wasn't all that surprising. It was just that Logan could have sworn James felt something, if he wasn't telling anyone about what happened between them. Unless…James just wanted something that he could blackmail Logan with. But there wasn't really anything Logan wouldn't do for James. That was mostly because Logan has had a crush on James for more than the couple of weeks since the incident.

Today was another Friday, and Logan wasn't looking forward to the weekend. He and his mother were going to their vacation home up in the mountains after school. It wasn't that he hated going up there, or hanging out with his mother. It was just he knew that he was going to have tons of homework this weekend, especially since the week after next was finals. And…there may be a party this weekend that James' friend, Jett, was throwing. And Logan was actually being invited to it. He wasn't sure who wanted him there, but he wasn't about to question the unexpected invitation. But the only problem was that he and his mom were going away for the weekend.

XxX

When Logan got woken up by his alarm clock, he sat up straight in bed. It hadn't been the first time that he's had the same dream; the one about James, when they had met. In fact, he's had the same exact dream almost every night since. That is, when he wasn't dreaming about James and him alone.

The first half of the day went by really fast. No one seemed to have been talking about Logan, still, and it was surprising. He was for sure that James would be making fun of him for wanting to kiss him, but he wasn't even being hinted at about it; not even by James, himself. In fact, if you asked Logan, James seemed a little uneasy about being in the same room as Logan, even. Which Logan wasn't sure what to think about that.

It was lunch, now. And Logan was sitting alone at his table. The couple that usually sits with him, had gone home early because they had plans – like Logan and his mother – for the weekend. As Logan was looking around the cafeteria, his gaze quickly landed on James' table. To the right of him was Carlos, one of his best friends. And to the left, was an empty seat; but normally, Kendall sits there. Kendall was another one of James' best friends. The three of them always were together, no matter what. Well, unless one of them was on a date; it seemed like that to everyone that didn't know any better.

Logan quickly switched his gaze away from James, when James' gaze looked over at him. Logan wasn't sure what sure what the look on James face meant. But Logan wasn't going to dwell on it long, because after a couple seconds he saw that Carlos looked over at him when he noticed James looking over at Logan. After Carlos said something, though, he and James stood up – James seemed reluctant.

It was surprising to Logan when he realized James walking towards him with Carlos. Carlos was an intimidating boy, in Logan's mind. Mostly because he wasn't afraid of anything. Plus, it didn't help that Carlos was co-captain of the hockey team. And he had known the captain his whole life, which made Logan jealous, because his whole high school life he had wanted to have a small conversation with James; even if that meant only one word or one sided.

When James and Carlos reached Logan's table, they quickly sat down in the empty seats beside Logan. Normally, James and Carlos had a certain blonde with them. But today seemed like it was different because they didn't have the blonde with them. James was refusing to look up at Logan, while Carlos was staring intently at him trying to get him to look away from the book that he was reading.

"What are you guys doing here?" Logan asked, without even looking up to see who it was.

"Well, James here says that he has something to ask you. But won't even walk up to you to ask." Carlos said.

"Oh," Logan said, looking up to see that James still hadn't looked up to look up at him. "So, what – uh – do you wanna ask me – um – James?"

"I – uh – it's nothing." James quickly said.

Before Logan could even say anything else, James quickly stood up and made his way towards his own table; quickly sitting down next to the new guy on the hockey team.

"What's wrong with him?" Logan asked Carlos, who was still sitting there as if James hadn't even left.

Chuckling, Carlos quickly replied. "He just doesn't know what to say to you; that's all."

"Why does he not know what to say to me?" Logan asked, looking over at James.

"Well," he leaned forward a little, and I had a sudden sense of déjà vu. "He doesn't want me to tell you, but -"

Cutting him off, James quickly jumped back into his seat with Kendall joining the two of them and sitting on the other side of Logan. "What are you two doing?"

Carlos leaned backwards and looked over at James, and gave him a look. It wasn't long, before Logan started feeling uncomfortable; he wasn't sure what was going on between the two of them. But, apparently, neither did Kendall. Well, he knew about what happened; but he just thought that James did it because he wanted to figure out whether Logan liked guys or not. And, since James figured out that he did but probably didn't know it himself, Kendall figured that James was done with Logan. But here they were, sitting with Logan. He was almost sure that everyone's eyes were looking in their direction, and – normally he liked the attention, but – they were most likely whispering about them.

"We were just talking, James." Carlos finally said, after what felt like an eternity to the two that wasn't sure what was happening.

"Talking about what?" James was very jealous. It wasn't that Carlos liked Logan, it was just that Carlos liked being close to everyone. Carlos loved being the center of attention and being everyone's best friends. So, if Logan was going to be best friends with Carlos first, James didn't like that.

"Geez, James. Does it matter? We were just talking." Carlos said, looking over at Logan for the first time since James and Kendall joined them. "Right, Logan?"

"Uh, yeah. Just talking." Logan said, not really sure whose side to be on. With James, he'd be on his good side. But with Carlos, he would probably be able to learn what he meant.

"Alright, as long as you're telling the truth." James told Logan, not completely sure if he could trust them. But if Logan was saying the same thing, then he had to believe it.

"So, Logan?" Logan looked over at Kendall for the first time since he's sat down next to him. "We hear you were invited to the party…are you going?"

And just like that, everyone's attention was put towards Logan. He never liked when everyone was looking at him. Which remained true today, because he was turning bright red.

"Well, I was thinking about it…" Logan said, "But my mom and I are going out of town this weekend. So, I can't."

"Ooh, where are you two going?" Carlos, being the enthusiastic one, asked.

"Uh, there's a cabin up in the mountains that my father's parents used to own…and we used to go up there every year over spring break. But my mom has a business meeting in California. So, we're going this weekend." Logan's father died a couple years ago. He was on his way to pick up Logan from his only friends house, and a drunk driver crashed into him, head on. For a while, Logan blamed himself for it; because if it wasn't for him, his father wouldn't have been on the road and wouldn't have gotten into a car crash.

"That sounds like fun! What do you guys do up there?"

"Well, we have a hot tub. But usually I just play video games, unless my mom decides to go down to the lake."

Before anyone could say anything the bell rang, signaling that the end of lunch had come. As Logan was getting up to throw his food away, he noticed that James' friends at this usual table were staring at him. He quickly walked over to the trash can a couple feet away from his table and threw his trash away, and then went back to his table to grab his things. Kendall had already left; he was making his way towards his friends. But James and Carlos were still waiting at the table for Logan to get back.

Once Logan got his backpack on and his book that he had been reading in his hand, him and the others started walking.

"Uh, can I ask you guys something?" Logan asked, a little apprehensive. When he saw them nod their heads, he quickly asked his question. "Why are you guys talking to me? I mean, I'm Logan. No one likes me."

"You know, you probably shouldn't be thinking about yourself like that. I'm sure you aren't that boring. I mean, I spent almost a whole lunch time with you. And I wasn't bored." Carlos quickly answered, not wanting to have James answer with something that wasn't nice.

"I just – I meant no one has talked to me – besides my mom and the teachers – since my dad got in the car wreck."

"You haven't talked to anyone your own age since then?" Everyone in town knew who Logan's father was and what happened to him.

"Uh, yeah."

"Well, I don't know about James...but I plan on changing that."

"What's that supposed to mean, Carlos?" James questioned Carlos, a little too defensively. He didn't like that fact that Carlos was talking about him like he wasn't even there. but what freaked him out, was thinking that Logan would have talked about him behind his back also.

"Well, you didn't want to even sit with him today. So, I just figured that you didn't want to be his friend."

Even though Logan should take offense to that, he didn't; because he knew the truth to why James didn't want to be his friend. And he didn't blame James for not wanting to be his friend. If it was Logan who had almost kissed a guy, just for black mail, he probably wouldn't want to be friends with that person. Not that Logan would use someone like that. He wasn't that mean; in fact, he wasn't mean at all.

"Well, maybe you should rethink what you know." Suggested James.

"What?" Carlos and Logan exclaimed at the same time.

"Maybe I want to be friends with Logan."

"Why didn't you want to sit with him today, then?" Carlos asked, trying to figure out the real reason that James wanted to be friends with Logan.

"Carlos, you know why."

"Well, Logan doesn't." Carlos looked over at Logan, "Right, Logan?"

"Uh, no…I don't?" Logan didn't mean for it to come out as a question, but the statement had a little bit of uncertainty in it.

"See? Logan doesn't even know what's going on."

"You know, maybe we should get to class. The bell should be ringing soon." James said, trying to get away from the conversation of his own intentions.

"Right. I'll get this out of you sooner or later, James." Draping his arm around Logan's shoulder, Carlos started walking away from James. "So, we have class together. And just to prove that I'm not messing with you, I'm gonna sit next to you today."

Everyone was already in class, and right before they walked into the room the bell rang. So, when they entered the classroom, everyone's eyes went to the two boys that had just walked in. Carlos' friends were trying to figure out why Carlos was sitting with Logan. But seeing as how the overly enthusiastic teenager was unpredictable, they didn't really think anything of it. Carlos does things like this all the time; making friends with the ones that the other popular people would never even give the time of day. And considering that he was James' friend, they couldn't even change the fact that he was allowed to hang out with them.

When Carlos and Logan sat down, the teacher started to take roll. When she got to Carlos' name, she looked at his original seat and almost marked him absent. But that was quickly fixed, when Carlos called out "here!" When the teacher was finished, she got to work on teaching them about science. Logan was paying attention on the lesson, taking notes about everything the teacher said or wrote on the board. Carlos was just trying to copy what Logan was writing down, trying to look busy so the teacher wouldn't mover him away from Logan.

As soon as the teacher gave them their assignment for the day, Logan got to work on finishing it. Carlos wasn't sure on what to do, so he continued to copy what Logan was doing. And when they finished – five minutes later – they had nothing else to do.

"You do know that when you copy someone else's work, you aren't really learning anything, right?" asked Logan, when he noticed that Carlos' paper had the same answers as his.

"Well, I didn't understand it. And usually people just let me copy, instead of helping me out."

"Well, that's not very right." Logan said, "I can help you, if you ever need it."

Carlos smiled, "Thanks, Logan!"

The rest of the classes went by rather quickly. Carlos and James were in Logan last class, while Kendall was in the class before them. Kendall didn't even acknowledge him, while James and Carlos sat next to Logan in the class they had together. Logan was still confused as to why they wanted to even notice that he existed, but didn't bother asking them a second time.

As they were making their way towards Logan's locker, because Carlos wanted to ask him something, none of them said anything. James was standing right next to Logan; close enough to feel the heat radiating off his body, but far enough to not be touching Logan. Carlos had his arm around Logan's shoulders, just like earlier after lunch.

They reached Logan's locker a couple minutes after the bell rang. While Logan was putting away the books that he didn't need, Carlos and James were standing there talking about the weekend. Carlos seemed a little off, and that was kind of confusing; he was never off when it came to anything that he was looking forward to.

As soon as Logan was closing his locker, Carlos spoke to Logan. "So, you said that you and your mom were going up to the mountains this weekend, right?"

"Uh, yeah. Why?"

Ignoring Logan's answer, Carlos asked another question. "And it's just the two of you, right?"

"Yeah…why'd you wanna know, Carlos?"

"Well, I was just thinking that since you and I were friends now, I can't let you play video games alone."

"And you want to come, don't you?"

"Maybe?" it came out more as a question than a statement, like Carlos wanted. "I mean, I know I shouldn't be inviting myself…"

"Haha, it's fine Carlos." Logan said, cutting Carlos off before he could take it back. "In fact, I'm sure my mom would love that I brought a friend with us." Turning to James, "You can come, too; if you want."

It wasn't that Logan was all for the idea of Carlos and James wanting to come with him and his mother, because he didn't get to see his mom a lot with the job that she had. But it was a lot better than when his mother had to go off in the middle of the day, and having to be in the cabin all day by himself. Plus, he didn't want them to realize that he had a problem with them wanting to be his friend; if that's the real reason as to why they had suddenly taken interest in the nerdy boy.

"Oh, I want to…it's just the party is this weekend." James said, trying to make up an excuse so he didn't have to go.

"James, you always go to parties. When do you ever get invited – by Logan – to go up to the mountains?"

"Uh, considering I never talked to Logan before today, I would say never." Even though it was expected, it still hurt Logan to hear that.

"Exactly! Come on, you can go to the next party. Besides, the three of us know that today wasn't the first time you two have talked." That made Logan curious, did Carlos know about what happened – or almost happened – a couple weeks ago?

"Carlos! You promised not to bring that up at school!"

"Hey, no one's even around to hear us." Which was true, there was no one in the hallway and no one could eavesdrop.

"Whatever, you still promised." Carlos was giving James a puppy dog face, begging James to agree on going. "When are you leaving? And where do we meet up?" James asked Logan.

"Uh, I think mom wanted to leave in an hour. And we can meet here, if that works for you guys."

Carlos quickly said that was fine for the both of them, and said goodbye to Logan. He was dragging James away, saying that they needed to hurry up and get stuff packed. Before they left the building, Carlos turned around and waved goodbye to Logan, who returned it.

A/N: What do you think? Is it worth continuing?
