Jealous

Alejandro sat at the kitchen table, his manicured nails bouncing off the reflective surface. He knew bringing Heather home wasn't going to be the wisest of moves, but when the snow started coming down heavier than expected, his house had been closer than hers. As soon as the two set foot through the door they found themselves surrounded by family who were very intrigued to meet the youngest member's girlfriend for the first time. It was just his luck that Christmas time was the one time a year his whole family came together, and with the holiday just three days away, the majority of the extended Burromuerto family were in town.

The tanned teenager huffed as he watched the scene unravel before him. Jose, his older brother, was 'woo-ing' Heather. Heather wasn't paying him much attention, but Alejandro didn't know that. As far as his eyes could tell, Heather was undoing at his brothers advances, and just as he was about to put a stop to it he felt a kind hand on his shoulder. His mossy eyes, clouded with hate, turned to find his sister-in-law looking down with a knowing smile.

Adriana Burromuerto was the wife of Alejandro's eldest brother, Carlos. She had been part of the family for nearly ten years, over which time she had grown fond of the youngest Burromuerto boy, seeing him so set apart from his brothers. Carlos was much more reserved, a business man at heart, while Jose took life as one big joke. Alejandro had tried to match both of his brothers in their expertiese, but he had never found one for himself, failing at all his attempts. Adrianna had pitied him at first, but had seen how much stronger his errors had made him.

"I know that look, Alejandro. I've seen it many times on my husbands face." The older woman spoke with a sugary tone, as if knowing something that the teenager did not- which, of course, she did. She knew what Jose was playing at. Yes, he would steal Heather away from his baby brother in a heartbeat, but what Alejandro didn't know was that Heather's will was much stronger than that. He underestimated her. "You're jealous," she taunted. Alejandro guffawed at the thought. He did not get jealous. To get jealous you had to fall, and to fall he would have to give away parts of himself he intended to keep. He waved his sister-in-laws silly implications away, getting to his feet and joining his girlfriend on the sofa, icy glares being sent his brothers way the whole walk over.

Jose took Heather's hand in his, giving it a chaste kiss before departing, winking at his baby brother as he passed. Heather's raised eyebrows knitted together in confusion as she turned to her boyfriend. He was looking at her with quizzical eyes, as if he had a million things to say to her, but just couldn't find the words- which was unusual for him because he never bit his tongue. But deep in the workings of his mind, Alejandro found his ideas changing, and maybe-just maybe-he found himself falling.
