She was too late to save them.

Erica could feel a hot tear slide down her cheek, her heart beating frantically as she spotted Jack in the crowd, his head tipped skyward toward the heavenly, white light that shined down upon humanity for the first time, hypnotizing, brainwashing them. Bile rose in the back of her throat as she rushed toward him, shaking him with all of her might, begging him to snap out of it.

It wasn't enough, she knew that it wouldn't work, but she'd been hoping it would be- that she'd be enough. Instead, she settled for curling her arms around him, protecting him, holding him in her embrace as she cried silently against his shoulder and the last solid bit of her soul shattered.

"I'm so sorry, Jack," she whispered against him, her fingertips squeezing the back of his neck, brushing through short, sandy hair.

It was all that she could do for him, yet she was certain that it would never feel like enough. Guilt still suffocated her at every turn, for leaving him behind, for betraying him, betraying their friendship and sleeping with the enemy. She could see it in his eyes, his hurt, his jealousy, every time that she stood just a little too close to Hobbes or sided with him during a meeting. There was only so much that she could rationalize about her behavior. At the time she'd thought that she deserved something to call her own, that her affair was hers and nobody, human nor V, could take that away from her. She should have known better.

"I'm sorry," Erica whispered again... over and over until her voice cracked and the tightness in the back of her throat threatened to overwhelm her.

She closed her eyes, her lips just barely grazing the side of his neck as she nuzzled closer and waited for Anna to release him from her grasp, for him to come back to her.

She was too late to save them, to save the world, but maybe if she tried hard enough she could save him.

End.
