Narumi Ayumu: Modern Day Sherlock Holms or Murderer?
By: Yuizaki Hiyono
Years after the incident at Tsukiomi Private School, this question still arises, is Narumi Ayumu, current head of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, a murderer whose sly reasoning and connections to the police officer heading the investigation or was the real culprit, Nohara Mizue, caught by this young super sleuth?
Hiyono stopped typing for a moment, thinking of what to say next. Many newspapers and magazines wanted to print her story of Narumi Ayumu's first real accomplishment. And since she had been present at the time they had turned to her with a three day deadline and the promise of her story on the front page of almost every paper and magazine in Japan. What had sparked this onslaught of requests was the fact that Ayumu had returned to Japan and had become the new head of the Tokyo police. After working overseas for Interpol for almost ten years Ayumu had wanted a line of work that was a little quieter and that required less travel.
Of course Eyes had come with him, reluctantly or not, Hiyono didn't know, but they were together and this made Hiyono's job even harder. She had asked Ayumu for an interview about the incident, mostly just for the chance to see him since she still had her high school notepads that covered the story. Eyes had been there when she came to the door, welcoming her into their home. He wasn't cold, but there was a definite dislike in his looks and tone of voice. For a while she wasn't sure why this was, but then remembered that every time that Eyes had seen her it had been with Ayumu, hanging off of his arm none the less.
After a few minutes he appeared to realize she was not going to make a move on his lover and his attitude toward her softened. The rest of the interview went smoothly and Ayumu treated them to a wonderful dinner from a country that she had never heard of. She ate as much as she could, and was extremely grateful when Eyes suggested she take home the leftovers since apparently there was an excess of them filling their refrigerator. Smiling at the comment Ayumu neatly placed a kiss on Eyes' forehead before taking the dishes into the kitchen.
It was only after she was alone in her small apartment that Hiyono started to feel the impact of the kiss. She knew that the two of them were happy, and couldn't help feeling jealous. She had met Ayumu first, so why had he ended up with Eyes? Didn't Ayumu notice her feelings at all? Taking out the Christmas cards she had received from him every year, she gathered that he had. It was just that he was different, he loved her, but not in the same way.
Focusing back on her article was difficult. Hiyono wanted to write about how Ayumu was a good person and would never murder anyone because of their back round, but she had to give both sides of the story. That is what being a good reporter is all about, the 'melody of truth'.
