Love Is Louder

Melody stepped through Degrassi's doors. She knew it was gonna be hell. When you sign everything you want to say, it makes people uncomfortable. She saw the person she assumed was the principal.

"Ahh, Melody. Welcome to Degrassi." She waved. He nodded and directed her to her first class. Science. She tried looking around for it, but ended up running into a really great looking guy. Sorry. She signed. He looked perplexed.

"What?" He didn't understand sign language. Sorry she mouthed. He nodded.

"Why didn't you say it?" He looked at her. An odd look crossed his face as the realization hit him. "You can't talk, can you?" She shook her head. "What's your first class?" She signed Science but he didn't understand, so she mimed beakers and an explosion.

"Oh! Science! Me too. I'll take you there." He said. They came to an odd smelling room which she assumed was the science room.

"Ah Melody, Owen. You decided to show up." The teacher said. Owen nodded. He pulled out a chair for her to sit. He noticed that, despite her mute-ness, she was very smart. It was just getting the teacher to understand her. Melody sighed. The teasing had already begun. She got up to get a beaker. When she returned, she was going to sit down someone pulled the chair from beneath her. Her back throbbed, pain shot through her spine. Her face had hit the desk, nose bleeding.
"Ha, retard." A girl said. Melody pushed herself up and ran out. Soon, she was driving off. She didn't look around, didn't slow down, didn't look to see if anyone had followed her. It was just her. She pulled up to a coffee shop. It was the only one in town. She ordered lunch and sat down. Soon, she heard something outside, but paid it no mind. She exhaled. Bad Idea Magazine, I have your cover story; Mute girl attends regular high school. skips class on first day. She thought. She looked outside and noticed a blue prius pull up. As Owen stepped out, she knew she was screwed. He sat down in front of her.
"Melody. Look. I know how you feel, but you can't just run away when the going gets tough. I know people like that are ignorant asses but you can't let them win." He explained. This wouldn't have happened if you said something to those girls and you know it! He nagged himself. She stood up.
'Time to go' She signed. He nodded. He caught on fast! She went to her car. It wouldn't start. Owen noticed her distress and popped the hood.
"Well, here's your problem Melody. No engine. No battery. It ain't gonna start without either. Come on. I'll give you a lift. " She slid into his prius. It had that new car smell, mixed too much cologne and ...Vanilla? Melody shook her head. Ok. Owen was a weird guy. But he was nice. "Listen, You missed alot of classes, and they wanted me to give you your work. We're a bit ahead of the curriculum in everything. Do you want to come to my house and I'll help?"
'Yes' She said.

-A couple days later-
Melody sat at a table for lunch. Owen suddenly approached her, with another guy.
"Melody, this Drew. He's a friend of mine. Drew, Melody." Drew smiled. Melody waved. Apparently, Drew knew sign language. He started translating what she was saying. She could tell it was easier for Owen now that he could understand her. Owen went to go talk to a teacher about some project.
"Melody..." Drew said.
'What?'
"You're lying to him everytime you pretend like you don't know he's in love you." Drew explained.
'He's not'. She said.
"Liar!" He was being playful, pointing at her and smiling like a cheshire cat. She burst into giggles. Melody sighed. Owen sat down again. Melody found herself wondering if his every move suggested something more. He's not into you! She reminded herself.
